Flatten Multicam with XML?

Hey guys (and girls) of FCP.co,

I've got a question, One thing that has been discussed on this forum multiple times, is the lack of a "Flatten Multicam" feature in FCPX. If I have a project consisting of several multicam clips in with 2 angles each, cut into the primary storyline, is there any way I can flatten/finalize the clips with an XML round trip to Resolve 12 or some other software? The audio does not matter.

Thanks,
-Mark

the xml correctly describes what that active angle is, so it’s up to black magic to read it correctly. having to manually flattening every multicam clip would not be an ideal workflow, especially if black magic still read it wrong. we should request that black magic fix this: www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/contact/email

I think that you may be misunderstanding my question, I'm not asking about getting a project into Resolve, but rather, if there is a way to use some 3rd party software to convert a mulicam timeline/XML to a timeline made up of the original clips, so that I can apply stabilization etc...

I know that there is software that will modify a FCPX XML for various functions, although I can't recall what it is now.

I tried exporting a timeline to Resolve, and it transferred perfectly, including the multican clips, but I don't se a option to flatten them their either, so unless I'm missing something, that Idea won't work.

It used to work, before resolve supported multicam, but apparently it doesn't work with resolve 12.

someone online claimed that you could somehow flatten a multicam by running it through Xto7, so maybe that's a possibility.

Have you tried the round trip with Resolve? I think I just did this recently, and it did flatten the multicam by default after I re-imported the generated XML. I'll have to check for sure tomorrow.

I ran it through resolve 12, and got back almost the exact same project, only one slug failed to transfer, but the multicam clips were exactly the same

I don't have resolve 11 anymore, but maybe if I hunt around I can find the disk image.

I just checked my timeline now, and the mutlicam clips were definitely turned into regular clips when I imported the XML generated from Resolve (version 12.3.2). Hm, very interesting that it didn't do it for you. Are you using the "Final Cut Pro XML round trip" preset in the delivery page? It's possible that there is a setting that I have checked that you don't, but I can't find it at the moment.

I had just used: file>Export XML,
Doesn't using the deliver page mean that resolve renders all the clips as pro-res?
or is there a way to only render clips that you have changed/graded in resolve?

Ah ok, I see the difference. In my case, we are finishing a project after doing the color in Resolve which is of course a standard workflow. So for us, that would be something we would want, which is rendering the clips as ProRes with handles. This does collapse the multicams, but certainly they are entirely new clips. I'm pretty sure with delivery, you only have the option of rendering individual clips or as one long clip. You can manually set an in/out to select which clips to render, but I don't think the unrendered clips will match to the original.

You have to ask yourself: is there a reason that you need to flatten this multicam at this point? If it's something you have to hand off and you're near the finishing stage, it might be ok to have those new clips with handles. In this case, it's equivalent to doing a media consolidation. Otherwise, I would try Xto7 to Premiere or FCP7.
