I can view (originally 16:9) images on 720x576 video from digibeta as full screen 16:9 in QuickTime7 ( 'panoramic' selected in QT preferences).
Why does FCPx not appear to allow full screen /16:9 viewing (and picture remains squeezed)?

How does it work in the QTX player?
Try changing the aspect ratio in Settings in the Info inspector.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I am trying to archive a 16:9 video to file. It comes from digibeta tape as 720x576.
Viewed in QuickTimePlayer7 it did look ok unsqueezed in 'full screen' but, this is on a 16:10 monitor.
In FCPx selecting Anamorphic override - 'Widescreen' the image in the Viewer appears to lose its edges which is a worry. Saved as a file then viewed in QTP7 these edges of the picture are not lost. However the complete, correct image can only be viewed 'Single' or 'Double Size' and with a large black border all round. ( 'Full screen' really stretches it beyond normal).
Unfortunately, after FCPx to view this 'Double Size' also produces a thin vertical white line at right edge of picture top to bottom of screen.
It doesn't fill the monitor screen from side to side as a normal 16:9 image.
In FCPx in Widescreen mode although it changes the timeline images, and images in clips, viewing full screen is still the original squashed image.
As an archive I am wondering if 'Widescreen' mode will affect playback later on. And where does that white line come from after FCPx?

Further to my reply, having since restarted FCPx, the Viewer is now showing a proper 16:9 'letterbox' image ie. no lost edges, and correct format.
Furthermore in FCPx , View /Playback / 'Play full screen' will either play the image as 16:9 with a large black border or, fit the monitor as letterbox. I need to see why this varies.
So far so good?

One thing to keep in mind, is that the viewer zoom settings are separate for the browser and the timeline, even when they are displayed in the same viewer window.

Thanks.
For me, changing settings between None and Widescreen appears to affect both Browser and Timeline images at the same time.
When changing settings :-
Browser image in the Viewer changes ok between a full screen squashed image and a correct letterbox 16:9.
Timeline image seen in the Viewer only changes between full screen squashed or, full screen corrected but with both edges off screen, (not 'letterbox').
