Okay. So this annoying things keeps happening when I go to use the blade tool. My story will kinda gray out and then these diagonal lines overlay on the storyline. It's really annoying and I've had to restart final cut a few times. How do I fix this?

You've opened a clip or a compound clip into the timeline. Go back to your project and edit there. Open the project from the browser.
