New to Final Cut Pro X--How to prevent edits in timeline from changing original media?

I recently starting using Final Cut Pro X and I've encountered an issue with my clips. It seems as though when I add an effect or make a change to a clip in my timeline, it alters the original media as well. I've been trying to revert the clip to it's original state but to no avail. I'm worried about masking further edits because of this. How do I remove a botched ken burns effect for example? Merely clicking blue effect button only disables the effect. I want to delete it altogether. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No, technically impossible.
get familiar with the basic concept of Media Manegement in FCPX; I strongly assume, you don't edit in a Project timeline, but in a clips timeline, aka the Original…

As I mentioned in some other thread:
I'd like to recommend the Lessons For Final Cut X from rippletraining;
itunes.apple.com/de/app/lessons-for-fina...-x/id952621966?mt=12
(link to US AppStore)

the first 10 lessons are free (!), but give you a kick into the basics of media management... and 10$ for the other lessons is worth every penny....

Hi don't worry you are not altering the original media, only a reference to it.

You can always create a new library and re-import your footage it will be like new.

But as Karsten stated you are working in a way that is unusual. it is sometimes handy to edit a clip in the timeline but for most cases you want to have a project first.

Final Cut Pro X is a database and has a video editor attached, any edits you make write to this database and the database gets information from the original media. The original media cannot be changed, through normal use of Final Cut Pro X.

How have you imported the footage? Did you leave in place or say in library? This seems to be the first issue new users face, once you get to know this aspect, it becomes easier to manage media.

If you choose leave in place, then FCPX will create what is called symlinks, basically tiny reference files pointing to the original media, which may give offline errors if you disconnect this drive, if not using the harddrive on the mac.

Edits will not make changes to the media, basically all you are doing is editing a database, which points to a safe location for the original media.

Yes, clicking the blue box just 'toggles' the effect on and off.

To remove an effect, click the main grey bar to the right the small blue box. (The bar highlights slightly blue). Then hit the 'delete' key to totally remove the effect.

Select the clip in the timeline first...

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful explanations! I think I am going to invest in a few training courses. I know that the only way to get better at things is to find people more experienced so I came straight here. Thanks again.
