What codec to use for USB TV's ?

Has anyone here ever tried exporting a movie for plugging into a TV with USB?

I need to burn a batch of trailers and a couple of episodes for some presentations. The marketing guy wants to take a portable HD TV along with a USB stick with the movies to the presentations.

None of the standard compressor settings seem to work on the TV's I have been able to test.

I am reading on the net that most require Xvid or MP4?

Anyone had any luck?

h264 in an mp4 does the trick on most of these devices...
don't overwhelm with crazy bitrates etc, stay within the Youtube recoms, such as 1080/30p/8mbps ....

but...
some ask for designated folder structure! Older Playstation firmware for example asked for a top-level 'VIDEOS' folder, containing the h264.mp4 This can only be answerd by the players Manual....

and, for sure: stick fat32 formatted, for a start, 8_3 naming scheme...
Only latest devices maybe ntfs (for UHD)

Hmmm...thanks, but even when I export as h264 it's still ends up as a QuickTime .mov, which seem to be incompatible.

Do you have any specific export settings that have worked in the past? Thanks.

What I do frequently for my Soccer Moms&Dads is:
Share/Apple Device 1080/… and under Options, select Computer

creates a PS3/4, Xbox, Samsung TV compliant mp4 video file....

Every TV i recently tried (samsung, lg and sony) accept the files exported via the "apple devices preset". The bitrate is reasonable, just make sure to change the file extension from .m4v to .mp4

As Karsten said, you can output an mp4 for "computer" instead of "apple device". But the bitrate is higher, so higher is the risk of stuttering. The overall quality is not that different imho.

Thanks. Just tried this now, burned a trailer with the apple devices preset, changed the extension to mp4, and put it on the usb ( only item in the usb). Still no luck, 3 TVs not recognizing it.

Really? Well, I think that you need to read the specs of those models in order to know what kind of files you can use. It's strange because h264 mp4 is the most common file type supported by tvs.

Yes, you're right. Also tried the computer method from Karsten now, also not working. I'll try it on my home TV and a playstation when I get home to see if it's the TVs that are causing the issue. But I'll have to make a plan b as the TV that is used for the presentation is one of the ones that's not working. Probably I'll get one of those generic little media players...

That's an idea. Or maybe connect an ipad/laptop/appletv to the hdmi port, but I suppose the choice is budget related. The usb drive is obviously the cheaper method... When it works

Try Share>Master File>Settings, then pick:

Format: Computer
Video Codec: H.264 Faster Encode
Resolution: 1920x1080

If that doesn't work try the above but 1280x720.

If that doesn't work download the PDF manual for the TV and see what the specs are for video files played from USB.

Just keep in mind that a lot of TVs (ours included) can only play back JPEG stills, and audio from the USB port, not video.

Definitely a good idea. We use these (and lend them to clients) to get around this whole problematic playback issue. (Our Panasonic plasma presentation TV only plays USB movies in AVHC format!?)

The AV box we use is this...

www.amazon.com/VonHaus-1080p-Mini-Media-Player/dp/B00NEIYBK0

This plays h.264 1920x1080 QuickTime movies at 'Vimeo recommended' specs very nicely, used with a fast USB drive.

The only slight downside is the VonHaus box doesn't see Mac-formatted drives. You need to format the USB drive into EX FAT first.

Thanks everyone; I tried all the suggested workarounds, but still no luck.

This might be the TV's as mentioned above, but I don't have any of the manuals for them so I can't be sure.

Anyhow, generic media player is the next stop!

User manuals for everything made are online now. Do a search, you'll find it. I've found user manuals for esoteric stuff that was discontinued decades ago.

Try one more thing. Create the MP4 in Quictime 7. If none of the above worked, this might not either, but it's worth a quick try.

Thanks again everyone who responded with ideas.

In the end I got one of those overpriced Lightning - HDMI adapters. Wish I had got one earlier - now using an iPod for the media player. Works very well!
