key wording with synced clips

key wording with synced clips was created by parkerhqj
I've just shot an interview with two cameras (wide shot & c/ups) and I have them synced up in my timeline using the boomed mic audio from one camera. And I figured out how to do a poor man's multi cam edit. What's the best way to use keywords and favorites for this workflow? I have three hours of interviews so there will be a lot of them. As far as I can tell, you can only apply keywords & favorites to clips in the browser. I may have to do all the cuts in the timeline, export the project as one file and reimport it back into the project. Is there a more efficient/smarter way to do this? I ran into a similar problem the only other time I've had to do this with FCP7 and I made a mess of it then. I'd like to not repeat that. Any suggestions for a sane workflow?

Yes, keywords and tags have to be done in the Browser.
Not sure why you'd have to export then re-import.
Place your main wide shot in the Storyline, then add your close-ups and cut-aways as Connected clips. Then just use the Blade tool (
to cut out what you don't want to use of the Connected clips.

I've figured out how to do that. I'm just wondering what to do about favorites. If I make a bunch of favorite clips in the browser (from the wide shot angle), I'm not sure how I'll find them in the timeline. I can't bring down my favorite clips to the timeline because I have to make all my cuts on the timeline because of the two angles (I would have to label the clips on both camera angels and sync them up in the timeline - a nuisance) . I have three hours of interviews and it would be nice to label the various clips and I can't do that in the time line. I'm not sure there's anything I can do about it. If I made my cuts and then exported the whole clip, I could reimport them and then choose my favorites in the browser and then bring them down to a new time line. That's pretty convoluted and probably more time-consuming than just trying to remember where my various clips are on the time line. A strong argument for shooting with one camera!

You can name your Favs. Once marked, change name from Favorute to something else. You can also add a note to each Fav section. Use the Smart Search to create Smart Collections. You're very much not taking full advantage of these organizational tools. My course covers all of this (shameless self promotion).

I know how to do all that and it's a great organizational feature. I just can't find a way to use them with my synced clips since I can't bring them down from the browser.

Don't worry about it. I'm explaining it badly. I'll muddle through it and if I figure it out, I'll post my solution. Thanks.

Im not entirely sure this is what you mean but here goes. If you want to make a clip a favourite after it has been edited on the time line, right click the clip in the time line go to 'Reveal in Event Browser' just that part of the clip will then be selected with the yellow band in the Event Browser, then you can make it a favourite.

That would be a great solution, but when I right click on the range I've created on the time line, nothing happens. There's a little yellow box under the cursor that I think means "nice try, but no". I can click on the entire clip and have it revealed in the browser, but not a range within the clip. Is there another way to do this?
Wait - if I use the razor and cut the clip, I can do this. Let me play with that.
It almost works, but when I make the clip a favorite in the browser, it includes the entire clip and not just the range I've chosen on the time line. I would love to find a way to wrk around this.

Yes you would have to cut the clip it doesn't work when using the range tool.

I have to run to a shoot, but I'll revisit this tomorrow. There should be a way to do this so the cut clip appears in the browser as a cut clip and not the whole clip. Thanks for your help.

Why don't you just sync the clips in the browser. Then open the compound clip and turn off the extra angles. Then make your edit from that. Then when you want to do a cut away all you need to do is in the timeline open the compound clip. (just the part you want, then turn on the additional angles) and then move back out to the main timeline.
This is how I've been editing multicast stuff for weddings, that way in my main timeline it's just 1 clip but I really have 2 or 3 clips stacked on top of each other. The nice part is when I want to re-arrange items it's already a compound clip and I move just the one clip.

Ah, I see what's going on now. I assumed you were already making Compounds in the Browser to start with. Yes, do them all in the Browser first.

The problem with that is I can't get the clips to synchronize. I highlight them both and they get put in a compound clip, but they're not synchronized at all. If the clips are long, does that make it harder for fcpx to synchronize? The one I tried is 34 minutes.
