Combing 29.97i with 25i footage (possibly off topic)

Hi,

My apologies for posting this here, but I couldn't see where would be appropriate, beyond perhaps Compressor.

I shot a talk at the office. The audio on the office camera is sometimes sporadic so I took my little Sony camera and shot from another angle so provide dual redundancy for the audio. As it turned out I need some of the footage aswell.

I bought the sony camera in the US as it was much cheaper than in New Zealand. This shoots at 29.97i. The office camera shoots at 25i.

This doesn't need to be a top notch production, but it would be nice to have some tips as to my options here and for the future of any multicam shoots I get involved.

Any thought as to the best place to post, or suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance
Colin

This forum section is fine for your post assuming your question deals with how to handle that footage in FCPX. If you are asking about general info on using those frame rates, or how to use them on some other editor then the Off Topic section might be better. FCPX can handle mixed frame rates in a project, so to use what you have, create a timeline at the desired frame rate you want to deliver the finished video in and drop in the clips. If the project is created at 25i, your 29.97i clips will be automatically conformed to playback at 25 fps in that timeline. If you will be creating multicam clips, the frame rate won't necessarily be an issue, but FCPX I believe still has a bug when using different frame sizes in multi cams (i.e mixing 1920 x1080 and 1280 X 720 for example).

In the future, to be safe, always set cameras, that will be used in Multicam clips, to the exact same frame size and rate, and exact same audio (48kHz, 16-bit). Only change those between cameras if absolutely necessary.

Doing so on a weekly basis, due to budget restrictments, mixing all sorts of res and fps in a single MC - what bug?

Karsten,
The bugs reported on this forum referred to the video frame smearing or showing severe distortion if multiple frame sizes are used within a multicam. I never mix frame sizes in multi cams so I don't know if this has been fixed in the last few updates of FCPX, but it was still being discussed in v10.2.1.

hmm.... I have a very crude mix of 1080/50p, 720/60p and sometimes 1080/50i, 4k/25p, 1080/100fps here, in use in Multicam for about a year, every week - never had any issues... missed that discusssion.

Lucky me .. :)

Karsten,
Have a look at this thread. www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...diting-in-720p#67473

There are more if you want to search. Frame RATES have never been an issue as far as I can tell, just mixing sizes.
