Display artifacts usually mean FCPX is going to hang up or crash. A restart of the Macintosh is called for. We just do it. I'm not saying I know where they come from or why they show up or why a restart seems to solve this issue but this has been a flag since early versions of FCP, After Effects, Motion, and other video applications. We just do it automatically.

I have seen this on my Late 2013 MacPro. The computer is now being repaired so hopefully that problem and a few others will be fixed. There is a recall on some MacPro bought in 2015 that have graphic card problems.
