Hi!

We'd like to get some experiences with using SAN for a 3 person editing company.

Initially, I've been a little shocked by the prices of SAN and it's obviously "big boys / budgets toys" but surely, there must be some entry level solution for smaller budgets, right?

It's not as much about the speed or storage amount for us - but more a case of us wanting to start getting experiences, working this way and with that type of equipment, as we're planning to hire at least 5 people more this year (all of them will be editing shared RED content on their 5k Imacs.

Does any of you know of low budget SAN solutions?

Hey Kenneth,

We just did a huge FCP X install with a ShareStation at a national broadcast network. More about this on fcp.co very soon.

In the meantime the Lumaforge team has also been working on a totally new entry-level system that is within the price range of Synology and the likes, but that totally outperforms these prosumer boxes. More information will be published soon, but drop me an e-mail and I will be happy to give you a preview right now: ronnycourtens@mac.com

You may also want to give the guys at FCPWORKS a call, this is what they do.

We use a Small-Tree TitaniumZ Shared Storage solution (48TB), which is technically a NAS on steroids. We've got 4 edit suites running primarily FCPX (and when required PP). It's a budget solution (compared to the full SAN options) that I would recommend you check out. We get great speeds (+500mb/s read/write) over 10Ge to our MacPros. We work it pretty hard and so far no complaints.

Why does their site just say "Call For Pricing"?

Really frustrates me when companies do this. Just display the price!!! Then, when I call, you'll know the price has;t put me off.
