fixing reverb

Hey guys, if I could ask for some advise please. I end up with a bit of reverb from interviews where I am stuck in an office or hallway, small room etc. I have not been able to find a good way in FCPX to reduce it. There are a lot of ways to introduce reverb but maybe I just haven't found it. I am definitely not a great audio guy, I have good mics and I try to get it as clean as possible but sometimes I just get stuck. I found a plugin for PP called reverb reduction (de-reverberation) from acon digital, and for $100 plug in it looks like a really good option but it won't work with final cut. I really would like to have iZotope but for $350 and then I have to round trip, so if I can find a cheaper plugin for fcpx that would be ideal. I would rather not have to round trip audio, but maybe that is what is necessary. So does anyone have any plugins for FC that they like for these types of situations where you just need to sweeten a little bit?
Thanks

You may not like the price, but what you're really looking for is Izotope RX. Their de-reverb (and de-noise) are the gold standard.

2nd on the "expensive" option of iZotrope. As we continue to be forced into doing things that go against best practices (like trying to record good audio in a space that isn't) these tools become necessary. Gotta pass it along to the client, or have them accept lower quality audio.

I'm afraid this not is not a cheaper recommendation but it works wonderfully as I can attest - Zynaptic UNVEIL: www.zynaptiq.com/unveil/

I've had great results with removing reverb and other audio reflections.

How are you micing the talent? Are you checking the room for reverb before shooting? Sometimes you can just move some furniture around and that will help.

Julian is correct. I recently shot a spot where we recorded the VO with a soccer star in a locker room. We hung lots of sound blankets on C-stands and killed the "live" sound of a concrete room with metal lockers. With a little EQ in post and you couldn't tell the difference from a track that we recorded in a sound booth in studio.

You can try the envelopper plugging. It's a logic plug into FCPX. You have a preset call "room killer". It's too heavy and produce artifacts. But if you play with threshold slider and gain, you can get a good result and a sweet reduction of reverb.

Hi Hepler
If you record in a echo chamber; hard surface room, you will get the "reverb" mixed into the audio file. Hard to remove after the fact.
As noted it is best to avoid the issue while recording. In addition to moving furniture, blankets, etc… your choice of Mics can make a difference. Try a cardioid or super cardioid pattern mic instead of omni directional mic. The stereo mics on cams and external recorders like the Zooms can really pic up the echo. Go mono if you can.

The other thing to try is to point the talent on a diagonal to any hard surfaces and then stand in-between them and the surface/wall. Also put as much distance between the subject and surface as possible.

Hope this helps, Greg

All good info on blankets, mics, rooms etc. and yes I do all of that. But like I said in the original post, occasionally because of time, place and circumstances a little reverb still shows up when I don't have the time or the opportunity or it is just not physically possible to set up the shot correctly. But I still would like to sweeten it up in post. I certainly don't use a recorder or camera mic, or even a shotgun inside. I am using a michael joly head on a nt5 or the AT 4053b which both work perfectly, when I have the time to prep the room.
There are a couple of plug ins for PP that are under a $100 and they work really well, not hard at all to get rid of reverb, but I stopped using that program a couple months ago. So all I was really after was a plug in for FCPX so I wouldn't have to round trip to audacity, which I am doing now. Audacity works just as well but it is just another step, like round tripping through davinci, which I do less now that color finale has a plugin for fcpx with wonderful color controls.
Thanks

SoundSoap advertises as a noise reduction tool but I don't think it can handle reverb reduction.

hi

You can try Acon Digital - Dereverberate. It cost $99
acondigital.com/products/deverberate/

or

SPL De-Verb $59
www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/spl_de-verb.html

Both work great. The only thing is that SPL doesn't work with El Capitan yet.

Both are Audio Units so you can use them inside FCPX

hope it helps

Ben, enveloper is exactly what I was looking for. Works perfectly, thanks for point this out. From what I could see Acon and SPL require pro tools or similar, won't work with FCPX as far as I could tell. I could be missing something there. I would like for Acon to work, it is a bit more robust than the enveloper but like I said for the small levels I am trying to tweak, enveloper is exactly right.
Thanks again

Scott

I just had a chance to check this out and it really does work great. What an awesome tip! I'm surprised I never heard of this before. Thanks a lot!

FCPX includes support for Audio Unit plugins, so technically any AU compatible plugin should work, even if it isn't advertised for FCPX. Whether or not a given plugin would actually work I don't know, but someone that had the plugin could test it and tell you.

Apple has Logic Effects for FCPX PDF which didn't make it over to the iBook manuals.

That works but there are effects that are Logic only. Apple had one specific to FCPX. Of course there's enough overlap that perhaps doing two separate ones would be mostly redundant.

great find, thanks for sharing!

anyone knows, 49 is a time-limited introduction price? and if so, up to when?
