Hi,

I'm working on a video for a client and they have sent me some intro/outro graphics to use with some video I have shot.

The graphics have arrived in mp4 format with a green screen for me to use a keyer over (see picture).

The idea is that the graphics pull apart to reveal the video underneath. When I have used the keyer tool with the file it shows through to the video underneath as I want but it also changes to colour of the graphic.

Not sure why this would be and I don't know how to change it. Can anyone help? I rarely use the keying tool so I'm a bit lost.

It happens both with FCP X and Motion.

Thanks.

By default some amount of spill suppression is added to the key, which is magenta to counteract green spill. This is effecting your image, most notably on the yellow. Take out the spill suppression, which you don't need, and it should be improved.

The graphic file should really be given to you as layers with transparency. That's kind of basic for graphics handed off to video. Having to key graphics is just bad practice, but I guess you're stuck with what you get.

Definitely, don't mess with keying this.

In Motion, create two masked layers of their graphic to overlay the video. One with the left side of the graphic (plus mask) and one with the right side (plus mask). Then you can animate them apart to reveal the whole video frame.

In Photoshop, take their graphic in, chop it up and save the left & right sides as separate png files with transparency. Then animate the overlay layers in Motion or FCPX.

Good luck.

Yes, keying is absolutely the wrong way to achieve this graphic. Each of the two triangles should be independent shapes. In Motion I'd key frame one. Then use a Link behavior with a value of minus one, to make the other triangle move exactly the same way, in the opposite directly. Let the video be a layer below those two. No coloring issues.
