I've printed out all 49 pages, and have read through them. I see four things here, and I'm sure I'm missing some things. First, assigning effects by metadata tags, maybe. Second, audio meters based on roles (each role has a separate audio meter). Third, a mixer that is based on roles. Fourth, output based on metadata tags and roles, like we have already, but somehow enhanced. These four things seem to be all related to a new media processing system based on metadata. Very, very interesting. If we get this in the next update or two, it will be mind boggling. A true breakthrough in how we mix audio for broadcast and film. Looks like I need to grab some Merlot tonight and spend some time deciphering this patent document. AND, it is dated January 19, 2016, like, 3 days ago... hhhhmmm...

That's the date the patent was issued. It was filed Sept 30, 2011. If you're reading that you might need a lawyer to go with the Merlot.

Yes, you're correct about the date. Lawyer? For what? If you want to get overly technical, it was previously published on March 21, 2011. Only relevancy about the date is that it has been granted, and Apple won't let anything out until they have the patent firmly covered. The mixer and audio meters look pretty nice.
Which begs the question, if Apple had a roles based audio effects/meters/mixer/output system in place since 2011, have we not seen it until now because... ?
