Hi everyone!
I'm a TOTAL NEWBIE with FCPX and with video editing in general so I am sending out a huge thank you in advance for bearing with me here. I'm coming to you out of total frustration. I made a video that is 9 minutes long. I made it using footage I shot with a new Panasonic AVCCAM, edited it on a Mac running OSX version 10.6.8 with a 3.2 GHz Intel Core processor, with 4 GBs of memory.

After finishing the edits of my first video, I tried following the suggestion of my Lynda tutorial and went to publish it directly to YouTube using the Share menu. Both times I tried this, the process failed after about 5 hours, saying it timed out.

Then I tried buying Compressor 4. A video editor friend told me she exports first to a Quicktime format on her desktop, then drops the file into compressor. I tried this, trying all different formats and destinations and settings.

Everything I have tried has ended with the same result: several hours of processing, with the expected length of the process only increasing as time goes on. None of them have actually worked.

Right now I've got the Quicktime version of the video in the Compressor and the process will take about 8 hours, it says, to make a 9 minute video (10.22 GBs) in the lowest quality setting for web use.

What on earth is going on? Is the file simply too big? How can that be for a 9 minute video? Is it perhaps the way I shot the video itself? Did I miss a step in the editing process? Should it always take 8 hours to process a 9 minute video in low def?!

 Any and all help you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated here!!

Ally

Replied by BenB on topic Re: Can. Not. Export :(
Export from FCP X (Cmd+E) and use the H.264 codec, upload that on your own. The FCP X / Compressor auto upload feature does take unreasonably long to work.

Also do you have any type of firewall set up. Something like little snitch. I know if you have a firewall it may be stopping fcpx and compressor from doing the upload.

For a quick check to see if the issue is computer or network related.
Goto share > export for apple device> choose Mac and PC

Now a few setting I suggest. Choose better quality over compatablity, uncheck add to iTunes. And make sure it's single pass.

Now the single pass is huge simply because it's using h.264 and the nature of the codec, of you use single pass fcpx should use all your cores and your gpu to speed up the export. I exported a 4 minute 720p video last night on my laptop in under 2 min. I was blown away. I would say its almost as fast as my matrox with max.

If it still takes for ever to export it can be 2 things. The software is messed up some how. Or you have a hardware issue.

But remember apple has a support document for qt7 that h.264 can take up to 4 min per minute of video. So if your export using this method takes more than 50 min then something is wrong.

Ok. Now once the video is exported. Just upload it to YouTube like normal.

Oh yeah, the 4 min thing only applies if your timeline is rendered. But it sounds like you were able to export a full quality version earlier. This means it's probably the upload process and a firewall or something.
