Hello people, I just bought the latest iMac, having 32gb ram memory.

I've been working on a movie, which is all saved on to my flash hard drive, and the memory is running low now...
Yeah, I should've saved all files on an external h.d. but now it is what it is :)

Now the program runs so slow I can barely get it to function..

I want to make a complete backup of my project without having to start FCP...

How do I do that and so I can be sure that all of the project with files and all get backed up ?

I know where the fcp is keeping the projects and all, but I'm unsure of what to exactly drag and drop (if that's how it's done?)....
Someone please help !!

Assuming your library contains the media (which it will if you selected to "copy to library" when you imported the footage into FCPX) , then you can simply drag the library to copy it to any other location, preferably an external hard drive. If you chose to "leave files in place" when you imported your media, then you will have to open FCPX first, select your project and use the "consolidate" function to collect all the used media in the project to be copied into your library.

Creating history....one edit at a time !

Hi antetheman, Welcome to the forums
If you are currently not backing up you internal flash drive, I recommend you back it all up not just the FCPX library. I also recommend you do at least 2 back-up versions on different drives/locations.
You can use Time Machine for this, which I do, but I also make "clones" of my drives using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If your internal boot drive is nearly full, you will experience significant slowdowns. Why not move the media to an external drive anyway? You can move these inside FCPX to any connected drive.

Happy Editing, enjoy FCPX :)
Hope this helps, Greg

Hey guys, thanx for the help !
I managed to copy everything over to my external drive...

But now my problem is that after opening final cut, a popup window says "your program has run out of memory"....and the program is put on "pause".

Yesterday I could actually do som work on it, but today its back to "out of memory" again...

I tried to find some answers on the web, but it seems that a lot of people have the same problem in general, when it comes to El Capitan...

I have a top of the line iMac so it can hardly be the problem...

I have 32 gb RAM, 4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor (hyper threading)...

Be sure all 3rd party plugins are updated to EC compatible versions, for all applications you use. Be sure all applications have the latest updates. Trash prefs. Re-boot.

In order to discover what is eating up your RAM, start by looking in Activity Monitor. (In your Utilities Folder) This will give you a general idea about what programs are using the RAM and what processes are running and using resources in general.
If you just migrated lots of data onto an external drive, then Spotlight may be using RAM on a temporary basis to index the drive. Just one of many possibilities that can be analyzed using AM.
If you have other memory hog apps running at the same time, this will show up in AM. If the Memory is "Wired" and not being released, it will show up.
Activity Monitor is your friend, learn how to use it.
Report what you find there if it is not obvious and someone can help if you provide enough info.
As Ben mentioned, reBoot and trash preferences. You can also delete certain "Cache Files" which may have an affect.
Check your Plug-ins. Sometimes they are not written well and become hogs or leak memory over time.
Some apps like Photoshop can really consume RAM. Turn off any apps you do not absolutely need, even your web browser.
If worse comes to worse, you may have to reinstall software/OS as a last resort.
Hope this helps, Greg

Oh ya, one last thing, what is on your desktop?
Having lots of photos and other items stored on Desktop can eat lots of RAM. Keep the Desktop clean. Put it all away in Folders.
You will also see much faster launching then as well.
Hope this helps, Greg
