Hi group,
been realizing export via fcpx is not a great output. I'm venturing into Compressor 5.2 ish and noticing massive computer power usage and many crashes...
I'm on a reinstalled 10.11.1 os x and I use a mbp 2.6 with 16gb ram 1tb ssd and usually two usb 3 raids striped I get 230mb/s transfer between them and usually have standard canon, sony, red footage shot in 4k where possible. 600gb free space.
The clips are short none more than 2 min most about 30-45 sec, trying to output client log ish first light prores for editing.
added a couple of effects in the original files such as white bal. min. sharpening, some use neat noise reduction maybe a color mask and no audio.
I'm not that familiar with compressor but I have a custom 422 hq output with a little noise reduction, detail at 30% and that's it trying to from the external to the desktop (in this case the external is a standard lacie rugged TB) Not using the RED files as my tests show fcpx uses a low quality debayer setting and my boss ripped me for an hour about the quality sucked...
It really ruined my holiday... So, if you can help me out I'd appreciate it.

I think you might be setting up yourself for a painful editing experience after you go the compressor route. I only did what you are describing back with FC7 and that was due to at the time no native H264 import.
FCPX does output a high quality debayer from Red Raw from my experience. Is your viewer setting set to better quality?

Hi I definitely checked my settings but with the RED
the output compared to REDCine-x was night and day.
Not sure if this was the issue, but redcode in my system pref
was set to auto and if the project is 8 bit 1080p then redcode
sets the decode to 1/2 std.
Anyway, my output looked noisy and grainy vs the cinex which was more than 100% better.
Another odd thing I learned was compressor will allow a grouping of computers but not for fcpx project export only transcoding... So stupid.
h.264 is never fast in premier, or fcpx it's so much easier/faster to output in prores and convert using "pavtube" wonder share mpg slipstream etc... I used to own the Matrox and while it was faster it was also a bit lower quality in my tests.
What do you use????

When using Red files, my go to is usually FCPX or DaVinci for prep. I don't have any files at the moment to compare the Quality of the two in output, vs. Red Cine, but I'm surprised you're having problems. I'd also be very concerned with adding sharpness or noise reduction with compressor.
What were the export settings used in Red cineX?
Thanks,

I don't have any red files on any of my current HD's but I'd love to compare the two.

I found some Red footage from the web, and after exporting from Red Cine and FCPX, both as Prores 422 HQ, I can see no difference in quality.
HOWEVER, if FCPX is set to use Proxies and you do an export while in Proxy mode, there is a definite quality loss. Are you perhaps exporting while in Proxy Mode?
Hope that helps.

Same with me, no difference, except when set to use proxies.
