From FCPX to Avid Media Composer? was created by MDI
Hey FCP.CO,
I've been a lurker since the start of the forum, and U guys are the best!
I use FCPX my self on a daily basis here at the production company I work at In Denmark (with great pleasure AND result!!!].
But the rest of the company is AVID MC only.
I have a potential project coming in, and I have made efforts to edit it on FCPX. The reason for FCPX is because of Lumberjack and/or Shot Notes X = Metadata heaven = Speed = Better end result! And for this particular project, that is essential.
But since the rest of the company is build upon Avid MC, there are forces to convince and workflows to try out.
PLEASE: Don't start at flaming FCPX vs. MC word war.... THANKS
So heres my question to you clever guys:
Is a workflow like this possible:
1.Shoot video and audio along with using Lumberjack or Shot Notes X
2.Ingesting media and import and apply all metadata from Lumberjack/Shot Notes X, getting a complete project ready to edit (But not start editing).
3.Exporting project/event - with all metadata (ranges, keywords etc)
4.[PUT IN THE NAME OF SOME GENIOUS PIECE OF SOWFTWARE/WORKFLOW HERE]
5.Import to project AVID MC, and edit the project there (now with all the metadata)
So I would basicly use FCPX as a front end meta-data manager, but the cut the project in Avid MC.
Dead end or possible?
Best Regards
Morten

Hi Morten,
Nope, not possible. At least not without a lot of pitfalls.
You could use Resolve to create an AAF from the FCP X XML, but that won't preserve your organization or your metadata.
You know the golden rule in editing: never move projects between different NLEs. So I would suggest you do what so many people are doing right now: convince your management that they should at least have one FCP X department along with the existing Avid seats for projects that are better fit to start and finish in FCP X, such as the one you are describing. They absolutely won't regret it. Swiss national television has made this decision two years ago, and they haven't regretted it one single moment. Actually I'm flying over to Switzerland next Sunday to supervise the expansion of their FCP X department. TV2 in Norway is doing the same thing. And if you need someone to help you convince your people, I will be in Copenhagen in January.

Hi Ronny,
That was also my own finding!
I totaly agree on the change, I'm just being very thorough. They have seen the light in regards to the speed and the possibilities when editing in FCPX, but U know how hard it is for most people to change horses.
Thanks for the answer. U Rock.
