What order should I apply these effects? was created by Paul Anderegg
Looking for the least processor intensive, and quickest method, for exporting out my standard ENG timeline.
I shoot either 2160p or 1080p XAVC-L, and typically ingest without optimizing to save SSD space. My final output is 720p, and I throw in some levels and color adjustments, add a sharpening filter, and run tripod mode stabilization on anything that will accept it. I typically try to leave the project at native resolution until final export so that my 2011 Macbook Pro fan doesn't explode due to heat! I am wondering what fasted route to sharing my ENG footage would be?
As it stands now, I ingest, select all clips on the timeline, check off tripod mode stabilization, then wait. After everything is stabilized (typically 4K), I adjust my colors, saturation etc. When that is complete, I make sure my highlights are at 100IRE. Next comes the default sharpening filter, because 4K to 720 is an ugly soft blurry mess standards conversion. Lastly, I change the timeline to 720p and immediately export my h264 final product. I made the mistake last night of laying 4K on a 720p timeline prior to stabilizing, and it took FOREVER! I normally do not "render" anything, I just need to see colors and scopes, it's news b-roll being fed into the station.
Am I doing things in the correct order? Would optimizing on ingest from 8 and 10 bit long GOP to ProRes intra speed up things like the stabilization processing? Should I be sharpening after the 720 change, or on the 4K/1080p timeline? Obviously it would have to in the end be quick enough to make up for the additional ingest time needed. I also manage everything on a single SSD, but I have a secondary library on an internal HDD, if using that for ingest would actually allow any speed increase in dealing with these effects. This is for ENG footage, so time is a big deal to me, I need to shave minutes off anywhere I can! Thanks!

I think you're using a great workflow. The only suggestion I have is to skip changing the Timeline to 720, and just make a custom preset in Compressor for 720 output, then use that in FCPX as a Custom Destination. Leave the Timeline settings alone.
In Compressor you can also add a Sharpen effect to the preset, which would save you more time.
