Syncing a Library across two drives

Syncing a Library across two drives was created by patrick
I do most of my video editing on a 2009 Mac Pro with no Thunderbolt port. I have the FCP libraries on internal hard drives on that computer. I also have a 2011 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt port and I am considering getting a Thunderbolt drive for that computer. That drive will also have a USB connection so I could connect it to my 2009 Mac Pro using USB 2.
Would I be able to keep a copy of one of the Mac Pro FCP libraries on that Thunderbolt drive and sync it daily with the original?
I have ChronoSync which will sync the contents of packages. I would need to sync "both ways" so the libraries update to the most recently edited.
Would that work?
Thank you.
P.S. If my Mac Pro had a Thunderbolt port I would just keep one library on a Thunderbolt drive and plug it into the Mac Pro or the MacBook Pro depending on which computer I wanted to use.

Hi Patrick
Your 2009 MP will never gain TB connections, but you could install a PCIe USB3 card in the expansion slots. USB3 is very fast and for a single hdd, you will not saturate the bus.
The same is not true with USB2. I do not recommend USB2 for connecting media for editing. USB2 is the bottleneck.
In practical terms, there is no difference in speed between TB and USB3 for single or dual drives even when using ssds. It is the drives that create the bottleneck, not the bus.
A USB3 PCIe card will give you the fastest throughput between the MP and external drives.
I do recommend that the external drive and the PCIe card be UASP(USB Attached SCSI Protocol) capable as this protocol is faster than standard BOT (Bulk Only Transport). Just look for cards/drives that state "UAS or USAP" enabled/capable.
When you talk about "Libraries", this could mean just "Library" files or the actual media. You could for example, use an external drive as the Media drive and share the files(media) between the 2 computers. Then you only need to share/sync a much smaller "Library" file that only includes the edit info.
Hope this helps, Greg

Thank you very much Greg for your comments.
I think I will install a PCIe USB3 card into my Mac Pro and get an external hard drive with Thunderbolt and USB3. I have noted your recommendation for UAS or USAP compatibility. From your message it looks like this will achieve what I want, which is to have an FCP library that I can edit either on my Mac Pro or my MacBook Pro. This would remove the need to do any syncing apart from the obvious backing up that I do. It would be a neater solution all round.
I do tend to keep all media files within my libraries but I realise as you have stated that the media can be outside the library, so there would be much less to sync if I were syncing.
Your scooter and side-car looks lovely!
