Apple’s acquires company behind ‘Star Wars’ SFX that capture a person’s facial expressions in real time. Will this be used in fcpx and Apple Motion maybe?

And just what the hell will they do with that? Fancy avatars for FaceTime? Probably that's all they'll do with it. Would be nice to see it integrated as a tool in Motion, but I highly doubt that. I don't see Apple putting this technology into a pro app. Just into fancy eye candy for iDevice stuff.

Hi Jonny
I do hope that Apple moves into more 3D effects, so I hope this acquisition and about 5/6 others in recent years means it is. But who knows. There is also a lot going on underneath in the frameworks that could also support more 3D and animation in the future.

Apple may have also been interested in this technology to apply it elsewhere, like facial recognition for security purposes, or other things. Apple acquires many companies and technology every year and it is normally not clear what they will do with it. Sometimes a year of so later, we see it incorporated somewhere.

Apple must have had a reason, so time will tell.

Hope this helps, Greg

like this really weird 'Live Photo'.... LOL
typically just-under-the-chrismas-tree feature - used once, than forgotton.

A real use for 'face tracking' is recognition, I'd say ... I'm praying for years:

next big thing is auto-tagging.

we shoot thousands of pics a day, but all named DSC001, 002, ...
or 0000.mts ....
so, any technology allowing an automatically generated, searchable description of pic content is ... great. Yep, I'm aware iPhoto, iMovie and FCPX offer that for years. Anyhow, that purchasd technology could add something .....

I guess, Google will be first .... "pic shows Jack & JIll, running up a hill, in nonzipcode Idahoe, car in background is a 48 Ford, big block Hemi, clouds are cirrus, Jill is 2nd month expecting" ... sort-of :silly:

just learned today about Adobe FUSE CC

now, what's missing in Fuse:
individual movements just by hopping around or making faces.

Only …
Apple doesn't do a paint.app such as Photoshop.
And what do the folks at Daz3D think about Fuse? ;)
