Is there a neat way to do this? Just to take a still from the current project? I couldn't find one so I used Grab to get a jpg from the Viewer, but it seemed a bit of bodge...

Go to Destination preference and add Save current frane to the sidebar. It exports the frame under the playhead in whatever stills format you prefer.

If you need to export a lot of frames, this small free app helps you to automate the work.

meant as an addendum to Tom's tip:

you can define this 'Save current frame' as 'standard' export option, so, just hammering cmd-E onto the keyboard exports the actual frame ......

As an addendum to Karsten's addendum: you can also add any keyboard shortcut you like (using System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcut). Final Cut Pro allows for one default export option (cmd-E), but adding your own keyboard shortcuts you can have different export options right from the keyboard.
