Zoom function switching to Viewer while working on Timeline

I've reported this numerous times to the FCPX Feedback portal with Apple, but still with every update, I have this problem.
If I'm working exclusively in the timeline, cutting and moving clips around, yet more often than not, if I want to zoom in or out using the CTRL + or - keys, the VIEWER window will zoom in or out, meaning I have to then move my mouse up in to the Viewer screen to click Shift Z to bring it back to normal again, before reverting to the Timeline to actually continue with the edit! I have to do another physical click in the timeline to get the zoom keys to recognise that it is the timeline I wish to zoom in or out, NOT the viewer screen!
So, so annoying, as it is constantly stopping the flow of my work. It seems to prioritise the Viewer screen over the Timeline for some reason, but I would rarely ever need to zoom in or out the viewer screen (only if I am in Crop or Transform mode for some reason, but even then, I just hit the zoom/size button at the top and click on a suitable percentage.), so to constantly have to make additional clicks in random areas within the timeline (even when I'm already working in the timeline!) to make sure my zoom keystrokes relate to the timeline is really counter-productive.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Cheers!

Zoom in & out seems to default to whichever window I am working in.
For instance if I am skimming over clips and dropping them onto the timeline with the E shortcut, if I then cmd + /- it zooms out the library clip window. Likewise if the viewer is highlighted, cmd + zooms in the viewer.
If the timeline is highlighted then cmd + zooms in the timeline (the only time I really actually use zoom). However, I have never had it default to the viewer if I am working in the timeline - I have to specifically highlight the viewer with the mouse to make that happen.

I don't have that issue, I tried CTRL++ and I get the bong sound, 10.2.2 version I use, and CMD++ for zooming in and out on the timeline, around the position of the playhead.
My bugbear is not being able to zoom in when in listview mode in the clip browser...I hate the filmstrip view, that is counter-productive!! I have reported many times about this to Feedback...every update I hope to get zoom in/out in listview..but no....

Apologies, my mistake: CMD, NOT CTRL! Cheers!
And judging by your experience, it is clearly a bug in my end. It doesn't happen all the time, just every now and again it decides to act up and decided to zoom in or out the viewer screen when I'm nowhere near it! But once it starts, that's it, I have to consciously make another click in the timeline to make sure it is regarded as 'live', even though I have been working in it exclusively!
Even right now, I'm cutting a voiceover track to fit with the video, so am needing to zoom in and/or out on occasion to get the exact start points. Having done nothing else but move the audio clips around, trimmed edges, cut out blank sections, etc., (all entirely all in the timeline, not anywhere else), I then go instinctively click CMD + to zoom in closer on the timeline and voila - the view screen suddenly zooms in instead ...... even though I'm not even looking at the footage on the viewer screen!!!
No doubt if I restart everything, it will work as it should for another while, but still shouldn't have to keep restarting to solve problems (that's what Windows PC's are for!!!)

One weird cool tip/bug I have is: if I set Zoom In to Up arrow and Zoom Out to Down Arrow, it does it but in a veeeeeeery crazy way. I can't understand the logic.
B U T!
If I set Zoom In to the Numerical Keyboard Minus, and Zoom Out in the Numerical Keyboard Plus. No matter where am I in the app, when I press those keys FPCX zooms in/out at the playhead in the timeline window.
Hope it works for you too.

I'm in the same camp with the original poster. My FCPX defaults to zooming in and out on the viewer with CMD+/-. It happens almost every time I hit the keyboard shortcut. It's super annoying. Even if my timeline is highlighted and the last thing I clicked was in the timeline, it will still zoom the viewer. So so annoying because I almost never need to zoom in on the viewer but constantly zoom in and out of the timeline.
I've also submitted feedback many, many times for this issue. I think it's been happening to me for a couple years. It's been a few updates and still not fixed. I've even deleted and reinstalled FCP and that didn't fix the issue.

The viewer zoom in and out, that is annoying, one I would rarely if ever use, to be honest the best thing Apple could do is take zoom out of the viewer, completely, and make it an effect you have to choose like you do color correcting.....
Who thought it was a good idea to have it as a default is blind!!!

For those who don't believe this happens, or have never seen it, I finally decided to screen record to capture it. It didn't take much time editing for it to happen. As you can see in the video, the last place I clicked was in the timeline, and then when I hit the keyboard shortcut at 12 sec in, the viewer zooms out instead of the timeline.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!
Watching that is just making me shake, as it is EXACTLY what happens with me! It's also just weird now that I am watching someone else's workflow, yet I am feeling myself getting frustrated.... even though it's not my work it's affecting!! Haha!!
Many thanks for posting this - I should have done it too, but yep, SO annoying!!
Just one thing that MAY help you a little bit (and trust me, this is only a very minor thing!), but if you click in the viewer, SHIFT-Z makes it 'fit' again, instead of having to go up to the dropdown menu. I know, a very, very small shortcut that doesn't go anywhere near making this any more acceptable, but I guess any little bit helps!
