Synchronise clips question

Synchronise clips question was created by Brinky
Hi,
Shot a scene of multiple shots with my GH4. Audio recorded on a tascam d60. I just let the tascam run throughout the whole shoot. When I want to synchronize the clips the new clip is as long as the whole audio track. Off course I only need the video part with the synced audio. Am I missing something?
Thanks.

That is expected behavior. When you synchronize a bunch of video clips and that one audio track, FCPX creates a new synchronized clip which is as long as the audio track. Portions of the new clip will be black when there is no video to match. Just select the in and out points on the new synchronized clip and chose what you need and drag to timeline to edit. Remember also to disable the internal camera audio track once on the timeline as you one want the high quality audio from the external recorder and not the camera audio.

Thanks, well that's a pity. The audio track is around half an hour. The selected pieces are from 4 till 20 sec. So next time start stop camera and tascam at the same time.

I would think starting and stopping constantly would be a nightmare, because you would then have to figure out which video clips match with each audio clips when trying to synchronize? If you adjust the time display in the event viewer to show a smaller range you can easily skim and select portions you need from the synchronized clip?

Thanks you're right about that. I familiar with FCP X. I just wondered about this synchronize thing.

Just make it a multicam clip with one angle. That should lay out all your video clips and sync them to the one long audio clip (with gaps in between the video). Yes, in the future, you should cut the sound when you cut picture if you want to sync individual clips.

Starting and stopping both the camera and audio recorder is normal enough. I just usually call out the scene number and take & clap my hands ( gives fcpx a nice point to reference for the synch).
That's the same reason why in film days they would use a clapperboard I guess.
So long as each video and audio clip has some reference at the beginning then there should be no issue matching them.
