I have this problem.. I had an project with 1080p and tried 720p. Both they filled up the screen without scaling or zooming. But on other screens it shows black marge on top en below the dvd. I tried to change the settings on the dvd player but nothing wil help. I need an option that i make the dvd and it will blindly automatic fit into every window/screen/tv. Can anybody help me with a solution?

Sorry for my bad English! I hope u will understand.

FCPX won't do wide screen DVD, which is standard definition. Try something like Toast, which lets you set that up.

In FCPX, you could just make a Standard Definition, 16:9 aspect ratio, project timeline. In the original 1080, Select All, Copy, switch to the new SD project timeline, Paste. You may need to tweak things to fit the smaller frame size. Then let FCPX make the DVD from there.

You can create a master file in HD from FCPX and then use compressor's create disc share option which will allow you to make a 16:9 SD DVD (assuming you have Compressor).

Creating history....one edit at a time !

Hi Celine
Welcome to the forums.
What you are experiencing is differences in the screen viewing ratios between a 16x9 widescreen (WS) and the 4x3 standard definition (SD) ratio for older televisions.
The black bars you see when your dvd is viewed on SOME TVs maintains the WS viewing without causing a shift in ratio to 4x3. Some TVs will do this, some older TVs/DVD players won't. When it doesn't maintain the ratio, your movie will get distorted tall and skinny and missing some edge details.
If viewed on WS TVs, then it will fill the entire screen with proper ratio.
Having black bars on a 4x3 standard screen is preferable IMHO to distorted footage.
There is also the issue of whether the TV it is being viewed on can even handle 1080p resolution. Interlaced vs Progressive and other issues. The DVD player also plays a large part with the oldest not having controls or even the ability to play Double Layer (DL) discs.
So as technology moves on, older equipment presents problems. There is little you can do to cover all equipment.
To avoid this issue all together, just make the video into HD Blu-Ray(4k) and provide a new blu-ray player and widescreen High Definition (4K or greater) TV/monitor to everyone you send the disc to. Love to be one of the recipients of your generosity. :silly:
Hope this helps, Greg
p.s. If you have an older copy of iDVD around, it can make dvds as well at least up to Yosemite, Haven't tried in El Cap.
