Coming back to Editing and Final Cut Pro after a big break. A couple of simple questions! was created by CJ
I'm using final cut X, I haven't used final cut for a long time! There are some big changes! I just have a few simple questions! How do I turn on and off tracks on the timeline? The bit down the side at the beginning where you used to do it before has disappeared! Second question when I have two titles where I want to make the lettering the same colour. I've got the right colour for one, how do make the other titles the same colour? Thank you. CJ

Long time means pre-X? There no tracks in FCP. You can turn off clips in the timeline, or you can use the clip skimmer to see underlying layers. To select a color off another color you can use the Apple color picker by clicking in the color search or you can save a text style to reuse.

CJ, if you are new to Final Cut Pro X, having used Final Cut Pro (with no X) before, you should know that Final Cut Pro X is a new application that has only one thing in common with Final Cut Pro 5, 6 and 7: the name.
That means you should consider 'getting up to date' more like 'learning a new application where most of my previous knowledge does not apply.'
The good news is that Final Cut Pro X is great - the best video editing application.
To learn it, check out the resources gathered by Jonny Elwyn at

My bare bone basics may help.

Also this book is what I consider the best training for a newbie on FCPX. Do a lesson a night, get up and running properly, quickly, easily. It is self-paced, hands-on, and very practical.

Hi CJ
Welcome to the Forums.
In direct answer to your questions…
You can enable/disable clips by highlighting the clip(s) and pressing the "v" key. They turn shaded/grey when off.
FCPX has done away with "Tracks" per se.
Title color is as Tom says via the Apple Color Picker or make a Title preset. For color picker, in the info pane scroll down and click on the color box, up pops the color picker (default is a color wheel but you can change to crayons, etc…) after getting the color you want, you can drag the color out of the top color box to the bottom little boxes and this will save it for the future. You can also color match anything in the clips via the magnifier (doing this by memory, might be an eyedropper) and clicking on the color you want. Again this can be saved in little boxes. This technique always you to match text to a color for a quick color theme.
I agree, the new FCPX takes new learning but there is lots of online help available, both free and paid.
Hope this helps, Greg

Hi Cj,
FCP X is one app for which you need a tutorial . Once you learn the basics, it;s a great software. Ripple training comes highly recommended. I've tried it and it's a great way to learn this great app:)

Single best training for the new FCPX users is "Apple Pro Training Series; Final Cut Pro X 10.2" by Brendan Boykin. No better way to learn the app from the beginning. Well, yes there is, taking an instructor led class using that same book.
