Hi!

I have kind of a weird problem. I shot some scenes with a Canon EOS 70D. For the audio I used the Rode Stereo VideoMic. Before the first scene I forgot to turn on the mic. I turned it on after approximately 20 seconds. I thought the audio of the first 20 seconds is gone, but when I imported the clip into FCPX the soundtrack is half visible and the other half is kind of transparent (take a look at the attachment).

Now I need your help! Is the sound of the first half of the clip gone or is there a way to "activate" the "transparent" sound. I thought that if I don't record a sound then there also shouldn't be a soundwave, but there is one. It is not as dark blue as the real soundwave, but at least it is there.

Hope you can help me!

Best,
Simon

What you are seeing is the Reference Waveform. It is there to show activity when the audio levels are too low for you to see the actual waveform. Even with no mic, your camera records electronic noise. It is very low, barely audible, but still there, and FCPX detects it. Perfectly normal. You can turn it off in the Preferences, in the Editing section.

To add to what Ben said, there is no useable audio in that reference waveform that you can extract. That first 20 seconds that hasn't been recorded cannot be recovered since it doesn't exist.
