VO sounds good in Event broweser, but kind of muffled in Timeline.

I'm trying to determine why a lot of the professionally recorded VO I'm working with on this project sounds different when previewed in the Event Browser than it does when it's dropped into my Timeline, where it sounds more bassy and a bit muffled. I find I have to tweak the hell out of it to make it sound as nice and crisp as it sounds when I preview it in the Event Browser. I'm a pro stills guy, so all things video and audio are relatively new (and mystifying) to me.

Are you recording with the FCPX audio record function?
That shouldn't happen. Do you have other audio in that Project timeline? Does anything else have an audio filter on it in that Timeline?
Another thing, check the audio configuration of your Project Timeline. Is it stereo or Dolby? Is it set to something different than the original clip? Verify audio channel settings.

Thanks Ben, I'm going to check all those things. The VO was read, and recorded, by a professional at a professional studio, so I don't think that's the issue. Let me check the other variables you've mentioned and report back. Thanks again!
