How do I stop FCPX automatically opening Media Import Box when I insert a media card?

Hey guys, I know I'm not the only one with this issue - but can't find a solution anywhere. I have FCPX open pretty much permanently (it's what I work on), but occasionally I will insert an SD or CF card in to my machine to work on something else, but FCPX automatically brings itself to the front and opens up a media import box, even though I don't want to do anything with FCPX with the media on these cards.

Though I close it straight away, any work I then do on the media cards (SD or CF - it doesn't matter), I then can't delete the files off that card (as in, empty trash), as I just get the message then that the 'files are in use', so I have to actually close down FCPX if I want to empty trash!! :(

Anyone know how do I stop FCPX from doing this? it is a right pain! Cheers.

Here's an unintuitive place to look:
- Mount one of the cards that opens FCP automatically
- Launch 'Image Capture' app
- Select the problematic card in the list on the left
- Click the little arrow icon in the lower-left corner to expose handling preferences for the selected item

Anything there?

Much appreciated, but unfortunately I've already tried that and it doesn't stop it. Thanks anyway! :/

I don't believe there is any way to prevent FCPX from doing this. Maybe some OS hack but not any I am aware of. Have you tried ejecting the card in the import window prior to closing the import window? This might let you delete files from the card without the system seeing the card in use by FCPX. Also, as a side note - it's probably a good idea to close FCPX once in a while rather than leave it running constantly (might help with a few intermittent bugs that could pop up from time to time).

Hmmm, not much use to me ejecting the card straight after I insert it! Ejecting the card in the import window does exactly that - it ejects the card! :/

And yes, I do agree with closing FCPX every now and again (the clue is in where I say 'pretty much'!) ;)

Many thanks for the reply anyway. Cheers.

I guess that is redundant, now that I think of it. I was thinking the import eject might still keep the card mounted within the finder allowing you to work on it. But - clearly now that won't work.

Hey, it was a perfectly logical potential solution - as it was one I had already thought of and tried too, so you were definitely right in making the suggestion, and it is really appreciated you taking the time to make that suggestion too! Cheers! :)

This annoys me as well. I suggest you submit a feedback form to Apple about this - that's what I did. If enough of us bitch, they'll fix it.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I've added a feature to automatically close the "Media Import" window in FCPX Hacks .

This little app does the trick for Photos. Maybe it would work for FCPX? Might be worth a try?

Unfortunately not - all that app does is run the following Terminal command:
Code:
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.ImageCapture disableHotPlug -bool true

As far as I can see, there's no hidden option like this in FCPX - hence the reason for a more complex "hack".

FWIW ... I submitted a feature request on the FCP Feedback site. If you are annoyed by the behavior, please pile on here: www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

My Feedback #makeapplegrateagain :
My workflow involves doing things with Apps other than FCP X that are in other Finder Desktops than the one with FCP X. Also, my apps are assigned their own Desktops. It is very annoying and context disruptive that when I insert a memory card to use with my ingest/archive Apps, the Finder whips me over to the FCP X desktop where it's Import dialog was automatically invoked.

This behavior should be one that can be disabled (damn minimalism to hell) for everyone that doesn't use the "Insert-Import" workflow currently hard coded into FCP X.

Found this problem was a lot less annoying when I went to SSD to boot up FCXP. Now it just takes a few seconds and little time is wasted. Maybe you already have this feature, but I am on a 2012 Mac Pro and this made life with FCXP a lot easier in so many ways.

Yes. I get that but it in the real world of more complex workflows and Apps in different Desktops, it's actually a bad App behavior. Apple folks would surely wag their finger at other apps that do it. All these apps for noobs that automatically launch (like Windows circa 98) thinking they know best all have internet threads of people asking how to turn them off. Apple's Image Capture and Photos are two that both provide a way to turn it off.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil. All I'm asking is that you file a feedback requesting the enhancement.

There's a utility app to turn it on and off easily.

I actually called some friends at Coremelt to help with it when I was tired of putting that dang command line in day in and day out when doing DIT on a reality TV location. I needed to have Photos launch automatically for my personal stuff at night, but not for the production stuff during the day. And there you have it, the C.R.A.P. application.

That command doesn't work for FCP X. If that command is all the CRAP App does, it doesn't work around the problem either.

Is there a solution to this yet? It's really annoying, each time FCPX steals the foreground and does a popup each time I plugin a sd card

As far as I know FCPX Hacks (now CommandPost) is the only solution, until Apple eventually fixes it.
