Audio skimming dead in event browser

So I can confirm that I do have audio skimming turned on. I can hear audio when I skim in the project timeline. However, if I skim a clip in the event browser I can't hear audio. I see the meter deflect, there is a waveform displayed under the clip and if I open the clip from finder using QT Player of Preview there is audio . . . just not when skimming in the event browser.

I've selected the proper settings in system preferneces and confimred that AV output is selected. I can even hear the audio if I select internal speakers from the MacPro itself . . . but nothing other wise.

Using a Kona LHi card with current drivers, FCP X 10.2.2 and OS 10.10.5

Any suggestions?
