Exporting/Copying all clips from an FCPX event for a PC (Premiere) Editor

Hi there

I have a question.

In the last month I have ingested several memory cards for a documentary in an FCPX event.

The file names are NOT unique (it is AVCHD from a Sony A7s and a panasonic).

Because of time, another editor will edit the footage. But he is on PC and with Premiere.

Is there a way to export all the media "in an organized way" for him ?

I have opened my "Original Media Folder" but FCPX changed the names there.

Options I see:
- Simply copy the Original Files folder and then sort by date ???
- Use a new software from Automatic Duck: www.redgiant.com/products/automatic-duck-media-copy/ (but I don't own it) ?
- Use PrimariesExporter (but I don't own it) ?

Thank you so much !!
Manu

Options 1 and 2 won't work: the copied files on the partition get a CREATION date equals to the time of copying.

Then I loose the option to sort by creation date.

OK at this point I don't know.

Option 3 either, PrimariesExporter seems to work from a timeline.

You can use Automator to batch rename and move files with a custom "date-name" scheme that will change the filename to the creation date/time plus a title of your choice.

hmm I was hoping for something more mainstream.

can automator move them by creation date ?

actually now I think about it.

if I copy/paste in the right order, they will be created in the right order too, right ?

This sort of thing isn't really my forte, but I recently edited a stop motion made of of several thousand photos named with essentially random characters and the wrong file extension mixed in with 2 smaller size versions of each. I ended up using automator to name them with sequential numbers by creation date. Since I learn best when I have an example to play with I've attached an example workflow that you can play with if you want, to edit it just drag it onto the automator application icon. it will take a folder or a group of files copy them to a new folder in the movies directory called
"(username)'s movie files", sort them by creation date and then rename them "(username)'s movie file (sequential number) (creation date)". To use it, just drag the "original media" folder onto it's icon.
I'm not sure if this is what you wanted but at some time in the future, possibly next week, I'm going to be helping on a project editing some files that were imported from the camera with FCPX on a different computer with PP CS5, if you want I can let you know how that goes.
Also, some of the metadata from FCPX may remain inside the files and show up in PP even if it doesn't show up in the finder, someone with more experience than me might know that.

Hope this helps,
-Mark

Thanks Mark and Ben !

I ended up copying all the files from the finder, and it conserved the Creation Date !

So in the end it worked better than Automatic Duck (I had used the trial).

Ben, I know XtoCC works great, but I don't know if it handles event too.

Thanks to you guys !

Since Premier has no Events, that wouldn't matter. But I'm sure it handles them in some fashion. I may drop my pal Phillip an email and find out.

UPDATE: Here is what Mr. Hodgetts told me. "Yes XtoCC handles Events to PPro. We have put in a lot of effort to support PPro."

I'll second Ben's info. XtoCC works great with Libraries, Events, Projects... anything you can export as xml will show up in Premiere. Both KW collections and Events become bins. May require a bit of reorganizing, but works really well..

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)
