Synchronising two audio tracks with a video in 10.2

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how I can synchronise two audio tracks with the video with FCPX 10.2. If I have a camera shooting two people who both have mics recording their voices, how can I get both of them to be synchronised with the video without losing quality in one of them?

As it stands, I can synchronise one track with the video, but of course, the other voice track is rather poor. If I take the second track and synch it with the synchronised audio 1 and video, I can see there are two tracks (I disable the audio track form the original video), but the quality of one track is still poor.

Can anyone help me out?

So, you can in fact sync them. You just want to know how to clean up the bad quality audio file. Correct?

I'd have to hear a sample of it.

Not really sure. If I were to play a "synched" track, there would be a slight echo in it where the mikes are picking up a voice at a slightly different time due to the distance between them (i.e. a foot or two).

I'll try to get a copy of it sent to you asap.

Doug

Sound travels much too fast for a foot or two, even 30 feet to make any sync difference. If there's an echo, that is not the problem. Now, if you had latency in the recording devices, that would be an issue. But mic placement is not going to make any difference in sync'ing recordings.

Echo is not a problem unless it becomes distracting.

In addressing your problem, it is pretty important you synchronise that audio if you want to use it. Unfortunately, the delay might be less than a frame and that's going to make things interesting.

With each of your primary audio takes mute as much as you can of the other unwanted vocals and do the same for the other track. So you kind of cut between them interchangeably always chasing the good audio.

However if they are singing at the same time you have issues. Most productions with budget try and avoid this kind of thing when they can that's why its far easier to have performers mime in a video clip, but that doesn't really lend itself well to live presentations.

Lining them up is the best you can really hope for.

If the audio is attached to the video, you may have to unlink it from one and line up the other. Basically you do an audio edit, without worrying too much about the picture. Once you have the audio sorted you can drop in different shots from second clip whenever you feel like you need a different shot, but you'll have to lip sync manually.

There's also the multi-cam features and supposedly it does a decent job of lining up the audio, you can always try that. If it works it should make editing a hell of a lot easier too.
