Is it 'usual' for certain types of titles to render very slowly?

Some of them are quite complex and can be slow to render. Which ones are you talking about?

Hi again Tom!

It's the scrolling one - it rendered quite quickly in proxy, but it's taking ages in full quality!

Depends on the length and complexity and what's underneath. Three times it's length at a guess.

A ha, Cheers Tom

I have still photographs underneath it but there are LOTS of words on the scroll (about 350 names!)

Not a great fan of scrolls. My background is television, which never (hardly ever) uses scrolls, but single cards. Works much better on an interlaced display.

Scrolling text is very resource intensive. FCPX has to render each frame entirely as the pixels change with frame for both text and background.
This is mostly done using the GPU so your system configuration has everything to do with rendering speed.
Any change in clip will require complete re-rendering, so do your spelling checks prior to rendering.
Most people don't understand that moving text is so processor intensive.
There is even a speed/system test that uses the "Far, far away…" scrolling text to test system resources.
You are using photos underneath and this can add to the issue. Improper photos files have also been known to cause slowdowns on their own, even without scrolling text on top. Again resolution will play a role here.
You don't say the codec/resolution you are using and these can play a role in rendering times.
If other effects are applied, this will also affect render speed.
Is this just rendering inside FCPX or on export? Is it background rendering?
Other programs running?
All of this is to say, you may or may not be experiencing real issues or just "this is the fastest I can go given the limits of my system". You would also have to time the actual rendering times and let us know how long we are talking about.
Render overnight or go catch a movie and dinner if necessary
.
Hope this helps, Greg

Cheers Greg,

It took a long time - but it's done now!

It was the end of a Kickstarter DVD so I needed to thank 300 people!

Even on my 12 core Mac it took a couple of hours!

May be faster to do this in Pixelmator or Photoshop or Motion. Set up a project the width of your film, plus how ever tall it needs to be. Fill in text and export as a PNG. Then keyframe that inside FCPX. Should be much less GPU intensive.
