Hello

My iMac has been working really bad for the last year and as I have a lot of fcpx plugins, motion titles that I have created and imported into FCPX and Generators I have always make a clean install BUT later I have restored everything with Time Machine.

I've been doing this since Snow Leopard and I think that might be the problem with my mac.

I would like to make a really new install but I need to know if just copying all the folders in Users/me/Movies will do the trick.

Could anybody please help me on this?

Thanks

just copying all the folders in Users/me/Movies

/Motion Templates ....
And check, the folders are 'localized' - select folder, cmd-i, and check "Name and Suffix' ....

When you do a clean erase and install (which is an excellent method for keeping your computer lean and fast) you can indeed copy the contents of the old user folders into the new user folders.

About FCP X plugins: if the plugins are just Motion templates, everything will copy over and work. If the plugins require dedicated installers (FxFactory, CoreMelt...), you will need to re-install the plugins using the installer.

Just a word of caution. When you have performed an erase and reinstall because your system was starting to slow down, NEVER migrate the settings and preferences of your old user to your new user (using Migration Assistant). Migrating your user settings will also migrate any user corruptions and errors that may have been the cause of your slowdowns in the first place. After an erase and install, always create new user settings.

I totally agree with Ronny
Don't use Migration Assistant!
In fact, especially for a multiuser Mac, a clean install is a perfect time to create new user names and passwords.
The Mac will install a UUID (Unique User I.D.) for each user you create. If you use the same user name and password for a new OS set-up, but the UUID is not the same, you run into permission issues.
If you've been using MA from SL days, or even restoring user accounts from TM, you are just reintroducing crud and cruff.
Make back-ups on separate drive(s) and then drag and drop (or copy/paste) folders/files from BU drive to newly installed OS drive. When you do so, new permissions for files are assigned to new account.
You may have to allow read write permissions on the BU drive for your new user name in order to copy files.
Get Info on drive, click lock icon, click on +, add new user from list, assign R/W permissions.
I normally just leave my files on old drive and only bring over files if I know I will be working with them a lot.
Not creating a new user name/password can lead to a world of hurt. Good security practice anyway.
I always recommend a clean install for major OS updates. Minor updates within the same name OS okay to just update as usual.
Slow downs can of course be caused by many other things as well.
The Motion Templates folder is found in the Movies folder. (at least by default)
All the rest as Ronny says.
Hope this helps, Greg
