I recently had to work with some good old DVD's to make a rough selection of source footage.

The selection tools in FCPX would come in handy, I wanted to mark all the good parts and cut out the crap.

I started with the MPEGStreamclip to convert my unprotected DVD.

But of course it did not work anymore on Yosemite like it did in the old days.
There is a trick to install the MPEG2 component from apple but it turned out that i didn't need it for the conversion.

So I ended up converting the VOB files on the disk to one MPEG2 clip and to my surprise it would open in Quicktime Player X. But unfortunately it was not possible to import the same clip in FCPX.

It annoyed me that I had to convert this clip to ProRes just to be able to import the file in FCPX.
I did notice however, that I could save the clip from QuickTime Player as a new clip. I did so and the file was now "wrapped" in a QuickTime MOV file and suddenly it would import in FCPX just fine.

So it turns out that FCPX is perfectly able to work with MPEG2 clips as long as they are wrapped in a MOV file.
