FCP X Library too big was created by KP33
Hello,

I need HELP!
I'm new to FCP X. I started to work on a project, I watched some tutorials on how to create libraries, events, etc.

So, I imported all of my footage (a lot), and I'm currently editing, almost done, but my external hard drive is full.
Then, I discover that my library is 770 GB in size!!! I checked my folders with all my footage and they are only 200 GB.

Somebody can tell me why is my library that big? and what can I do to make it smaller? or what settings I have to use?

Thank you!

First, select your Library in the Libraries pane, go to the File menu, select "Delete Generated Library Files". There you can trash all your render files. And delete ALL of them. That should free up a bunch of space.

Then go to the Final Cut Pro X menu, to Preferences, to the Playback section, and make sure "Background render" is turned OFF! Don't turn this on, you don't need it. Also be sure "Create optimized media for multicam clips" is turned OFF.

If something won't playback well enough, simply select that clip (or clips) and go to the Modify menu and choose either "Render All" or "Render Selection".

The next question is, are you doing a lot of stabilization or optical flow slow-motion?

When you import clips, are you copying them into the Library, or selecting "Leave In Place", or both?

Are you selecting to Optimize and/or create Proxies when you import clips?

Thank you for your response BenB.

I deleted the render files and it free up more than 200 GB.

And to answer your questions:

1. The next question is, are you doing a lot of stabilization or optical flow slow-motion?
-Yes, I'm doing a lot of stabilization and slow motion, the footage that my client gave me it look bad, it has a lot of movement. It is the only way that you can watch the video without throwing up! Really!

2. When you import clips, are you copying them into the Library, or selecting "Leave In Place", or both?
- When I imported the clips it was copying them to the library but after 10 tapes and 14 DVDs of footage (almost 10 hours of footage and 8 hours of editing) I selected "Leave in place" for the last 2 tapes. Yes, tapes! hahaha

3. Are you selecting to Optimize and/or create Proxies when you import clips?
- No

Now, my question for you is:
Can I delete the footage that was copy to my library to free up space and nothing will happen with the editing that I already did?

I really appreciate your help!

There is no way you could leave in place when importing from tape. Maybe a glitch lets you select the checkbox, but a clip cannot possible refer to a tape. It is not even a file based medium.

Nope, you can't select Leave In Place for tape.

You have a lot of analysis files inside the Library from all of that stabilization and slow-motion (if you use Optical Flow). That eats up space. 10 hours of footage is going to require a lot of drive space. May be time for a larger drive.

I didn't import the footage directly from the tapes. I'm sorry to confuse you.
I captured it with fcp 7 and then transferred the files to fcp x.

My hard drive is 1T so I think I'm good for right now after I deleted all of my render files.
I'm gonna see what happen after I render just my finished project.

Thank you both for your response. I really appreciate it!!!
