Popping in Sound When Uploaded to Youtube

I uploaded a short video created in FCPX (latest version) and noticed that the sound is awful.

The video was taken using my iPhone 5S so I presume the sound is an AAC file which I have read can cause an issue but unsure if this is confirmed.

I ensured that the sound in FCPX does not exceed 0DB so is not distorted and sounds fine prior to upload.

How do I resolve this?

Here's the video:

Thanks

I believe this has something to do with Youtube itself. Can you confirm that the popping sound is not on the exported video that you uploaded to Youtube? I've heard this from different users and have experienced this myself, but as far as I know all of the people who have had issues own Macs. In my case I exported the video, compressed to MP4 using MPEG Streamclip and then uploaded that. There were no pops in my export nor in the MP4 file.

EDIT: Also, just a thought that occurred to me right now... what browser are you watching the video in? I'm using Firefox. Try a different browser or if possible, a different OS. Not all is equal when it comes to Youtube playback.

Hi Redifer, Thanks for your reply.

Re the browser suggestion I have tried both Safari and Firefox and the sound is the same.

The popping sound is not on the exported file although at the time I had not saved it locally and uploaded directly to Youtube.

What I have noticed is that the file on my HD does not sound as good as the sound I hear when playing the timeline. Not being an experienced user of FXCP I don't understand why.

It seems that the bass enhancer I applied to the audio file on the timeline isn't being exported.

Am I right to think that if I export as a file on my HD it should replicate exactly what I see / hear on the timeline?

BTW - I have played the file in both QT and VLC - both sound the same.

First, being a native of New Orleans, man, that song is so overplayed around here... but a good version there by the band.

OK, what audio filters are you using? Why use the bass enhancer? I'd like to hear a clip of the original shot without any filtering at all.

Hi BenB.

I'm not a lover of that song but it was their last of the evening and as they were going on a walkabout I decided to record it. Ronnie Scotts do not permit recoding but I took a chance!

Here’s a link to the audio file taken directly from the video I took at the time www.dropbox.com/s/kzsdjgyandtquh8/NOSD.wav?dl=0 (You don't need a Dropbox account just select Download and at the bottom of the page select "No Thanks Continue To Download")

Where do I find the audio filters? I literally loaded the video into FCPX, opened within the timeline and added a bass enhancer because it sounded a bit tinny.

I then exported to Youtube. Oh, I increased the exposure a little as it's quite dark in the club. The other thing I did was to adjust the audio to reduce the peak spots from going into the red.

This all sounds rather amateurish but that's what I am at present with this software!

With regards to the band I'd never heard of them before but they were very good.

One other thing I noticed is that the original video is 183MB but when I exported from FCXP it became just under 2GB.

What has happened to increase the file size so much?

I'll assume your original file is a highly compressed MPEG-4 based format. H.264 or AVCHD or something. FCPX's Master File export by default is ProRes, which is not nearly as highly compressed. Thus, the file size difference.

Export without the Bass Enhance filter. Try that. Depending on your audio monitors, you may not be hearing accurate enough sound for some audio filters to give accurate feedback. Just a thought. Sounds like the audio is having some phase issue or something.

If you imagine taking a iPhone video and then importing that into FCPX, adding the bass enhancer and exporting to Youtube that is exactly what I did.

I haven't consciously conducted any compression process unless that is done by the iPhone and then decompressed by FCPX.

I'll try what you suggested and report back.

BTW when I import video into FCPX I use the standard settings - Create Optimized and Proxy media. Not sure is this makes any difference?

Thanks for your help.

If you upload the same exact file to Youtube right now, you'll find that you'll get either no popping or popping in different places. I don't think dicking around with it in FCPX is going to make a difference. It's just something that Youtube randomly does. Try exporting and uploading it again and keep it "unlisted". Upload it to Youtube, never let FCPX do it itself (nowhere near enough control when you do it that way).

I uploaded the file without involving FCPX and there is no popping and no noticeable difference to the original file.

I've since found out that H.264 files are heavily compressed hence why I have such a large file size when saving the master from FCPX.

Thanks for everyone's help.
