Help with Blu-Ray burning was created by VidGreg
Hi Folks,
Need a little help in burning a blu-ray (BD) disk. Time running out.
Tried to export from FCPX10.2.1 / OS 10.10.4 using the share destinations. I had added the Blu-Ray destination set to disk.
Using a new Samsung SE-506CB burner.
Selected the project set the file type etc…, went to "Settings" selected the burner disk.
It went to work, but when it came time to burn, no go. The drive will start to spin for a minute or so, then says it wants a disk, so I reclosed the drive tray then it spins and says waiting for drive and rinse and repeat.
Next I made a new export using blu-ray to HDD settings. This produced an .img file of 16.8 GB.
Tried to burn BD using Disk Utility, it basically does the same as above.
Launch DU, have BD drive connected, click on "Burn" icon, select .img file, starts to spin, then you get this message… "Waiting for a disc to be inserted…" even though a disk is in drive.
No Love.
Also tried to burn in Mavericks, 10.9.5
Updated the firmware of the BD drive, still no love.
Seems to be an OS issue, not sure.
DU sees the drive, but claims Burn Support = "Unsupported"
Have seen some other discussions about DU not burning BD and thought Apple claimed to have fixed this issue in 10.10.4
Doesn't appear to be any one model of drive, or brand of disks. Using Verbatim BD-R the better quality version.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Going bald from pulling hair out
Thanks, Greg

Have you tried a different brand of disc (I personally hate Verbatim)?

I hate to suggest it because it costs money, but try Toast. I'm not sure if you still need to buy their Blu-ray plug-in separately or not. Regardless, Toast burns much better than ANY Apple utility be it FCPX, DVD Studio Pro or Disk Utility. Or Adobe Encore for that matter. I always author elsewhere (like Encore or DVD Studio Pro) and then burn with Toast at the slowest setting possible. I don't know if Toast will recognize the junk that FCPX outputs when you tell it to write a BD file to the hard drive, though. If it's an ISO then you're in luck. I always use Encore as there is no better disc authoring program for Mac.
I've had great luck burning to Verbatim dual layer Blu-rays. Verbatim 4 lyfe represent yo!
I use an LG BE14NU40 BD-R drive and love it. Even if LG stands for "Low Grade" or "Lousy Goldstar".

Thanks Ben and Joe
Found my problem. It was the new burner I bought. Samsung support is worthless IMHO. Website wouldn't even recognize the model # and had to backdoor my way to finding a firmware update. That didn't help either, dead drive for BDs, will work for DVDs. Lots of hours trying to figure out the problem with the Samsung.
Bought an ASUS USB3 desk model BW-12D1S-U.
Burnt a short test BD and works fine. Burning a test of the whole movie now just to make sure it handles full length and will give it a viewing later. (Disk just finished burning while I was typing. Burner seems fast)
Verbatim, like most venders makes both good and not so good disks. They contract the manufacturing. It is actually possible to find out where and who manufactured the disks. Verbatim seems to sell higher quality disks in certain lines. Burning fine so far. Ben I got a couple of other brands just in case.
Joe, I actually own Toast and I have the BD plugin. You can either buy the "Pro" version or Roxio sells the plugin separately for $20.00U$D. Despite Toast claiming to support .img files, it doesn't support the Apple version put out by FCPX. Disk Utility will burn it to a BD however. Lots of people on forums claim Apple doesn't do blu-ray due to it being a "World of Hurts" (Steve Jobs) Macs just don't play blu-ray movies.
VLC with the BD libraries will, and also there is support for DCP format as well.
May have to try some other formats and see what happens in Toast and do a comparison.
Gave up on Adobe with CS4. Been robbed too many times. Just my $5,000 worth of upgrade fees worth of opinion.
Going to be up late finishing 1st viewing cut and burning. Disks get on plane for Maine tomorrow night. Sunday showing in theatre.
Still a little green around the edges, at least some of the green screens and refinements. There's always the "Director's Cut" isn't there.
Thanks, appreciate the help,
Happy Editing!
