Quick audio conversion ? was created by Jonathan Levin
If I record audio at 24 bit 96k and import that into a FCP project, will FC convert that to 48K, which is what I am hoping happens or leave it as 96k?
Thanks.
Jonathan
Thanks.

FCPX does not automatically transcode files to different frame rates or sample rates. A 96k file is 96k. Drop it into a 48k timeline, and you may have issues. Simply be sure the timeline you edit in matches the properties of your media. If this clip is the first you put into a timeline, and you created the timeline to auto format, no issues, the timeline is now 96k.

BenB.
So are you saying that even if I have a project in progress say 1920x1080 30p 48k audio that the 96k audio won't be conformed to work with 48k project.
That seems odd, since you can put different video formats in a project and I think they just work. Maybe audio is different.
I wonder if anyone has tested this. I like to take advantage of my recorders ability to produce 24 bit 96k audio, even though it would be resized down to 16 bit 48k.
Thanks for looking into this.

As I said, we did it in my FCPX class this week, and it did go out of sync with other clips. Not with itself, but with other clips. And for video work, you won't hear any improvements in audio quality recording 24-bit, 96kHz, as that simply records data outside of human hearing. If you were subjecting your audio to very, very heavy processing, maybe in theory there would be some benefit, but practically you'll never humanly hear any difference.

That's the itchy I can't scratch all the time...my solution is to upscale/downscale the audio firstly by using another converter, and then load the ready audio into FCP separately. It won't take much time as audio files are usually not large. I searched for hd video converter or similar in appstore and justchose one.

OK, so if you're converting audio to 48kHz to edit with, why not just record that sample rate? Bit depth doesn't matter.
You could use Compressor if that's what you need to do.

Thanks BenB and Whitemax.
After review of this and on the advice of others in my audio forums I've decided it is just not worth the effort or at all necessary to record at sample rates above 48khz for any of the stuff that I do or most of us for that matter.
