Imagine this.
A computer lab with about 8 Mac computers, all with their own individual hard drives, but also connected to a central NAS system (basically an external hard drive) for sharing files between themselves.
Throughout the year, we've imported footage via a high quality camera that runs with tapes. We simply import it directly into the event with Final Cut Pro X.
At the end of the year, I was asked to help with backing up all the projects and stuff from the Macs to the external system so that we could clean off all the local hard drives. After some research, I decided I just needed to consolidate the Library and find it in the movies folder and move it into the NAS.
This allows us to open projects in other computers, yes, but when deleted off of a Mac's hard drive, the version we've got on the NAS no longer works on other computers. I simply dragged and dropped the file to the NAS previously and it was moving loads of GBs worth of data (in one case, nearly 500) so I figured I wasn't incorrect in doing this.
Does anybody have any ideas how to make it so that all the projects get onto the external hard drive so that we can clean off the local hard drives on the Macs? I'm about 90% certain that we've already lost all the projects on the one Mac we've cleaned off. One is running the latest OS, I believe it's Yosemite? All of the others are running the one from before. (Snow Leopard? I can't remember... Sorry
)
I have a hard time explaining things so please ask questions if you'd like to help and don't understand.
