Shall I enable FileVault on MacBook Pro ? was created by Emmanuel
Hi there
I just purchased a 2nd hand MacBook Pro Retina and I was wondering if I should enable Filevault on it.
Of course I will edit using external harddrives, but is Filevault going to slow down FCPX anyway?
Thank you!

File Vault is a PITA for video, right up there alongside interlacing.

I agree with Tom except ... FileVault is a total PITA for ANY large files you need to access frequently. It's always nice to add an additional level of security ... though for real world work ... this is a big hit to performance that really isn't worth the effort for many users.

Very significant performance hit for processor intensive things like video. Every bit of data read and written to that drive, applications, app files, hidden working files, etc, will all require un-encoding and re-encoding non-stop. Places a huge demand on the system. It is there for governmental and high end research facilities, not us simple folks.
Lots of issues involved. If you're not an IT engineer, stay the heck away from it. I'm a retired IT engineer and I refuse to touch it!
