Importing pseudo-segmented files from BMD's MediaExpress

Had to implement a simple workflow that emulates the "growing files" method, without of course the automated segmenting of files and the following import.

I'm using MediaExpress to record a live clean feed from the Host Broadcaster of an International Horse Race event. Files are recorded in ProRes LT on an external drive, segmented by a manual stop&go followed by the import into FCPX ( latest 10.2.1 but my problem was also present on 10.1.4 ).

This works well for the first couple of files, but after that I get random cases of "black" files with zeroed TCs in the import list.

The import window sees also the incremented filename of the video still being recorded, so here it's absolutely normal to have those zeros and the black frame, but for a file that was completed and closed as an autonomous file ( immediately readable in all known players ) it is really annoying.

Even if I wait a little bit longer before opening the Import window.
Every time this happens, I have to relaunch FCPX to be able to import the latest finished file.

There seems to be no correlation between this "non-presence" and the length of the segment. As I come closer to the main race of the day, having already edited all the beauty shots available in the clean feed, I'm reducing the length of the segments to edit ASAP all the highlights of the race ... the prepping before getting inside the starting boxes, the race itself, the return to the winners circle and the ceremonial trophy handover.

I'm still lucky that with a healthy 21" iMac (2014), restarting FCPX takes only a very short time, but it's still frustrating, as that particular workflow really makes a huge difference in shortening the time I have to spend editing an EPK from such an event.

This workflow is not as sophisticated as editing with real, self segmenting growing files, like what was done at last year's Tour de France, but it suits our needs, with rather simple tools at hand.

I already send a feedback about this peculiar import "bug" ( if it turns out to be one ) but I wanted to check with the community to see whether others had done something similar to this pseudo-growing files workflow and/or encountered the same kind of problems importing into FCPX files coming fresh from the MediaExpress bin.

And maybe, some of you guys have a much better technique to solve that problem of editing as fast as possible an event that is still "hot" on the record.

Let me know if I made a mistake somwhere on the line .....

thx alex
