Applying LUTs prior to timeline

Hello everyone!

The editor I'm working for wants to use FCPX for this feature film. The DP created 3D LUTs for us to use.

I know in working with LUTs that they are applied to clips that are in the project timeline. However the editor wants to apply the LUTs prior to them being in the project timeline. He says when he edits the film, he doesn't want to edit in LOG but rather with the LUT applied. This means that for every clip that is in the event browser, it will have a LUT applied before bringing it to the timeline.

Every LUT application I can find for FCPX applies the LUT after it's in the timeline and not before.

I only see two options. (1) Either find an application that applies the LUT while it's in the event browser OR (2) somehow transcode the LOG files with the LUT applied to them and then import them into FCPX.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Ideally if such an application exists, and the sheer volume of clips involved, if the application could apply a single LUT to multiple clips. *fingers crossed*

The footage is being recorded on an Odyssey 7Q+ if that is of any assistance.

First, you forget every item in a Library is in fact a Timeline. Right-click any clip, image, anything, select "Open In Timeline". Then do everything you can do in a timeline to the media itself. Very easy.

But, it'd be nice to apply effects to media directly in the Browser without opening it all up. Like, select several at once, double-click an effect, done. I've done the feedback page about this before. I encourage others to do so, too.

BenB is absolutely correct.
(Very clever workaround by the way)
Apple should go about letting us have access to our own LUTS in the browser, not just their stock few.

Lets all bombard them with Feedback!

That, and allow us to do a proper batch export!

I meant let us have access to applying and adjusting Effects in the Browser. But then, that's how you get to the various LUT utilities. Just to be clear.

gotcha! That would be very nice too, though I would settle for "custom luts" for now.

and just cause I'm curious, Right now when you change the log processing in the timeline or browser, it ripples to all instances of that clip, browser, other timelines, AND Snapshots. Personally I wouldn't like timeline changes to ripple back to the browser and other timelines all the time. only sometimes would be nice.

How would others like log changes to be treated?

Thanks BenB. I did forget about the right click, open-in-timeline option.

Judging by the rest of your response, I'm going to assume there's no known app or plugin to attach the same LUT to multiple files.

I will also post it as a suggestion on Apple's website.

Thank you very much!

There are several effect plugins that let you apply LUTs (even custom ones) to clips. Just not all at once, which is what I assume you're referring to. Maybe Resolve could do it. That'd actually be a nice touch for Compressor, something that would add a LUT when transcoding.

Resolve will be able to batch apply a lut and transcode out. That's one of its primary uses.
