Screen typing effect (Typewriter effect)

Hi guys

I want to do a typewriter effect, but I would like to add the flashing line at the end of the sentence (like when you're typing in Word or a browser search field). I found a tutorial to do it in After Effects (but eh, after effects), so does anyone have an idea for FCP?

Thanks

Not sure what do you mean by flashing line, but you'll find the typewriter effect in Motion. You can publish the effect then for using it inside fcpx.

Not a typewriter effect, but an old PC screen effect. They plain typewriter effect already exists in FCPX. What he is looking for is the old CRT "green screen" effect (because the screen was monochrome green, not green screen keying), before the mouse. Typing, but the cursor, a simple underscore line, flashes where the next letter to be typed will appear.

That is a neat effect to pull, and I'd hope there was a third party effect for this. I'll have to look around. Not something I'd know how to do in Motion right off the bat.

If you have a link to the AE tutorial, maybe one of us can translate that into Motion?

Aha, a blinking cursor. Sorry for my poor understanding.

If it's justa single shot you need this effect for (=no Title Effect), i found this older advice from Andy Neil

www.fcp.co/motion/tutorials-for-apple-mo...nking-cursor-to-text

You can translate it to M5 word by word...
Using a mono-spaced 'computer' font (here: VCR from dafont.com ),make it green (or amber!) and it looks like this:

Older computer screens all had an underscore cursor. More modern mobile devices have a non-blinking vertical line. Depends on how old you want it to look.

.. and some had a blinking square:

If anybody transfers this into a 'title effect', s/he should offer selectable form.

... sounds like a little project for next weekend.... ;)

Yes, the first ones were squares that filled up the space the letter would then take up. That was super old! And I remember working with them! Big Blue, I for one do not miss fixing you. Volt meters and soldering irons were not my thing.

The thing would be to get that flashing image to follow and readjust with the text. Not sure that could be done simply in Motion as a template. May require some FxPlug coding.

This is exactly the effect I'm looking for, but just plain white background and black text - but those are not super important for the tutorial. I actually thought I included a link in the original post, but apparently I failed. This here is the After Effects tutorial:

But thanks for the link, I'll take a look asap!

Thank you Mr Balser - if I can remember this, the logic conclusiom is, I'M super old !!

LOL...

I guess, with the 'Typing' behaviour it's not possible.
So, instead a lunch break, I started experimenting with a mask, see attached screen shot.

Quantize the 'steps', and drag a copy of that behaviour onto the blniking 'cursor' to match its move with those of the mask ...

Not finished yet, and real-life is actually on a higher pro list...

… just plain white background and black text …

When the animation is done, it's a two clicks action to vary the color of cursor and font...

… as a 'text-plugin' it gets more and more complex… hey, it's a challange!

... I still have a Commodore 128 that does that. ...

The C64 was my first 'own' computer… peek and poke, cassettes, flashed Roms for 'hacking' ... <sigh>

And one major feature, no actual computer offers: instant-on! ; not from 'sleep/hibernate/wotever, no, real click-on ...
