Color Bars

Hey FCP X Users,

I am new to FCP X and am trying to learn to love it. Currently FCP X and I are on the hate side of the relationship, but I have hope we can turn things around.

My main issue at the moment is getting bars out of FCP X. We have a BON BXM-243L3G monitor, connected via a BM Ultra Studio Express box to the nMP. I want to calibrate the screen, and I want to see the output from FCP when I do. We may do some grading of our footage in Resolve, but for the most part we will build LUTs in Resolve and then tweak in FCP X as needed. Any suggestions on how to check that my monitor is Calibrated accurately would be awesome. I have been searching for, I am ashamed to say, days now and have not come up with an answer that gives me any confidence in the workflow. One forum mentioned generating the bars in Motion, and then importing that into FCP, but as I am new to Motion as well, I have yet to discover how to do this. Any tips on either of those things, or maybe a new direction entirely, would be much appreciated. I am open to suggestions.

Might you be referring to the color stripes of old FCP? That is something I miss from new FCP...

I was watching the Lynda.com tutorial on Resolve and it was mentioned how to calibrate, CalMan-spectracal.com or Lightspace-lightillusion.com for software calibration of monitors...

BM used to package a color bars clip in their installers. I don't know if that's still the case. You might also check their website or AJA's for a file. There is no color bar generator in Motion. I think there used to be. Can you generate bars in Resolve?

Google "brodcast color bars" and you'll get lots of freebies you can download and use.

Ripple Training has them included with this free set of generators.
