exporting compound clips

I have a project divided into four parts. Each edited timeline is about 4 minutes long. I have them as four separate compound clips on one timeline. When I open up one of the compound clips and try to export that part, fcpx exports all four compound clips from the timeline. Not sure why this is happening. Should I not be using compound clips this way? It's just a little easier. thx

Try selecting the compound clip the browser and expecting from there.

It's not in the browser. I made a snapshot of the master timeline, so the only compound clip in the browser is the earlier edit. The compound clip in the snapshot project is only on the timeline.

I'll need to rethink how I'm putting this together. I feel like I'm making an unnecessary mess trying to save a couple of steps. I'll stay away from putting long sequences in compound clips and just make new projects. Unless I'm missing something obvious. thx

Rather than opening up the compound clip, go back to your main timeline, make in-out points around the compound clip you need and then export.

Thanks - should have thought if that. Kind of weird that you can't export an individual compound clip from its own timeline though. Whatever - now I have a solution! thx

Just tested and I can. Your issue is very strange.

Yeah - don't know why this happens. I just rechecked it and the same thing: when I open each segment and try to export, I look at the projected file size and it says 1.07GB for each segment because it reflects the size of the full timeline. When I export it, it exports the full timeline. When I go to the main timeline and export each compound clip w an in & out point, it works fine. However, when I go back to the original master timeline, I don't encounter the problem. But I made a snapshot duplicate of the original master timeline and that's the one where I can't export the individual compound clips when I open them.

Select the compound. Put the playhead over it and press Shift-F. Export the compound from the browser. Or select the compound in the project and press X.

As soon as I put an in point on the compound clip in the timeline, it's the same as hitting x, so that works fine.

Interesting. I originally made a smart collection of my compound clips and until I searched for them using Shift F as you suggested, they weren't appearing in the smart collection as compound clips - just the original ones. Now as search for them one by one, they're appearing in the smart collection. I didn't think they were in the browser because I didn't see them in the smart collection. Maybe that connection has to be made manually before fcpx recognizes them. Whatever - now I know. Thanks.

When you make the snapshot there is no corresponding compound in the browser. When you use Shift-F it makes an independent compound in the browser, independent from the compound in the original.
