Can you imagine if FCP-X auto flipped your 3 axis gimbal footage on import if you filmed with the camera upside down.

Anyone know a plugin that would do this?

Doesn't the Flipped effect (built in to FCPX) do what you need?

The 'flipped' effect is 'horizontal' by default, but once applied this can be changed to 'vertical' (in the inspector).

You could vertically flip one clip and then do a 'copy' - 'paste attributes' to a bunch of selected clips to flip them all at once.

Better than that.....

Drop the flipped effect on to a clip, select vertical or both (I think you'll need both) and then SAVE as a new PRESET. Now you just need to apply the new preset and it's all done for you.

Do what Dave said, save as a custom effect.
Then select all the clips it needs to be applied to in the Timeline, and double-click the effect in the effect browser. It will be applied to all at one time.

In my experience with UAV's and other kinds of unusual camera mounts the camera isn't flipped, but rotated 180 degrees. (unless you're filming a mirror or though some kind of specialty lens) Using the flip effect in FCPX will put the right side up, but will also reverse left and right. instead, under Inspector > Transform, set the Rotation to 180º and then make a effect preset from there.

Because of the variety of subjects, it would be pretty much impossible to have a computer tell which way is up by analyzing the video, however some cameras do have accelerometers, compasses, and GPS so if they record that information in the metadata it would be possible to right a plug-in that read that data and then set the correct rotation for the video. Most still cameras and Image software have been doing this for a long time.
