I bought the Sony PWX-X70 and I am shooting in XAVC HD. I just recorded a small 2 minute clip so I can figure out how to import before tomorrow when I will be recording at church. I am sure that I have installed the plugins that are needed, not sure how to double check. but when I insert my card and I click import I see the card and the private folder but I can't import my file. I don't see it. If I go to the Finder on my card I will see the .MXF file under XDROOT -> CLIP.

If I try to open the MXF file using VLC all I get is audio.

What am I missing?

OK:
1. FCPX for months would not import these files - they had to be transcoded to ProRes with Sony Catalyst Browse or EditReady
2. There is no plugin for this - the plugin you're referring to is only for a different variant of XAVC that the X70 doesn't shoot
3. Recent FCPX updates have claimed to add mxf import, but these still did not work for the X70 files
4. But, finally good news! On Monday June 1 Sony introduced a v. 2.0 firmware update for the camera. One of the undocumented features is that suddenly FCPX can natively import, edit, and even optimize these files!

There still seem to be a few glitches - you may have to import from a card reader or the SD slot in a Mac instead of from the camera via usb, but you really shouldn't do that anyway - too slow. And, you may see multiple files for each clip - a file with a "movie" icon (includes video and audio), another with a speaker icon (just the audio), and a third with a generic graphic icon (a still thumbnail). Just import the "movie" file - and the import window does allow you to select ranges instead of having to import entire clips.

Note that this 2.0 update is free, is NOT the long-promised ($500) 4K update which is possibly coming later this month, but 2.0 is required to be installed before the 4K update can be applied.

Here's where to get the 2.0 upgrade - Sony calls it System Software Update v2.0

What do I do for footage that was recorded prior to the firmware update?

I am running Yosemite and I have FCPX updated and the Pro Format installed.

The problem is evidently in the way the footage is recorded or stored, because footage shot with the old firmware still will not import. You'll have to download either the free Sony Catalyst Browse or go to divergentmedia.com and buy EditReady ($49) - either will transcode to ProRes.

Did you do all this:
install firmware update
reformat SD card
record clips

...and when you try to import these new clips with the SD card in your computer or in a card reader you still do not see a file for clip 0001 that has an icon that looks like a little film frame?

Did you delete the Sony plugin?

If you're still talking about your old footage recorded under the old firmware, that will never import, you must transcode using one of the tools I mentioned earlier.

I did the firmware upgrade and recorded a small clip. When I try to import it I see Clip0001.MXF but when I import it it seems to be just audio. How do I check to see if I have the plugin installed correctly?

Do you have Mac OS 10.10.3 and FCPX 10.2.1? Make sure all that's up to date. Reformat the card, then record new clips. Make sure you don't change the clip format on the same card - that seems to cause problems for some users.

But the main thing is: there is NO plugin. The one offered by Sony does not work for these clips. I haven't researched how to remove it, but you might try that.
