Clicks on cuts was created by Circuit Factory
Hi Guys,
Experiencing a problem and can't seem to fix it. When I do a video and make cuts, I sometimes get tiny clicks at the point of the cut.
Has anyone else experienced this and how do they go about fixing it?
Phil

This is a fairly common occurrence, especially on quiet sounds. Usually you have to put in a quick cross fade to cover it.

Yes... I saw that... A tiny imperceptible cross dissolve.
What is the fastest way to put in Cross dissolves across every cut in a video and then make sure they are all as short as possible? What would be the sequence of steps that I should follow?

Select all, Command-T to add cross dissolve; select just the transitions, Control-d to change duration, type the duration (e.g. 2 for two frames, 100 for one second), enter.
Last edit: 02 Jun 2015 10:05 by lichinho. Reason: added a step for selecting the transitions

This also adds a dissolve to the video, though. If you want to add it to the audio only I think you might have to detach aufio first. Or am I wrong?

You are rigth that this also applies a dissolve to the video.
But instead of detaching audio - which makes for a mess in the timeline - for this purpose only, it is best to follow what Mark Spencer explains here:

Hi Phil,
Just as a background info, the reason the clicks appear is that where you cut a clip, the audio portion may not be at what is known as the "zero crossing point". The audio sine wave will not line up between the clips and a pop/click is the result.
Many audio editors/DAWs provide ways to cut only at zero crossing points or auto cross fades, but when you link audio to video frames, then it is more problematic.
The link provided by Lichinho to Mark Spencer's tip to creating "Audio only cross fades" is great and has become a custom effect in FCPX for me. Thanks Mark.
Wish Apple would provide an automatic cross fade or fade till zero crossing point for all audio built into FCPX. Till then easy to apply the custom effect. You can also apply the duration to the effect itself so it is always the same short length.
Hope this helps, Greg

There's no quick and easy way to do this in FCPX like there was in FCP7 without detatching the audio. Using audio only cross fades can work, but then you can't use any other transition on that clip and things must all be on the same storyline. Also, FCPX is incapable of making a 2 frame cross fade (or any other transition for that matter). 3 is the lower limit. Personally, I'd just take each cut that makes an audible noise and detatch that audio and add a cross fade (command T) or just drag the audio handles without detatching it and making a quick fade on each side. I'd leave the cuts that don't make a noise alone.
I'd like to say, though, that I'm glad you notice these noises. I've seen so many "professional" programs where the cut is plainly heard and the audio defect is ignored. You're already a step above a lot of people just for noticing! So good job, you already have lots of potential!

Of course you could also use Expand Audio -> Use Fade Handles but you only need very small fades. Like others however, I tend to use Audio Only Dissolves...
