Archiving - delete _AsyncCopying_ contents?

I'm currently archiving several projects to LTO tapes and came across a project that looked a bit too big.

Upon investigation I found the _AsyncCopying folder which seems to contain lots of files with extra numbers & letters after their names, e.g. P1250039-8UGVWR.mov.

Now, P1250039.mov exists in the external media folder (not stored in the library) and all seems good. I can't find any reference to these _AsyncCopying files in the project so am I safe to delete them? There's about 190GB of them!

It maybe that these were files being imported to FCPX when it crashed, as I seem to recall happening once or twice around the time this project was being ingested. I don't see any point archiving files that don't need to be there, especially if they are really taking up 190GB!

No. It's about 2 weeks since it was edited, just looking to clean up. I just had FCPX open to delete all generated files (done) but it's all closed again now. Only finder open.

If you had a crash, they may be orphaned files.

That was my thinking too. Shame FCPX doesn't clean this stuff up after itself. If it's not doing anything in these temp folders it should perhaps be deleting contents either at startup or exit.

Oh well.... here goes :)

They were all in the 50MB to 2GB range and all looked to be from the same day's shoot. No other day's files were there.

I deleted them and everything still seem to work so I'm guessing they were all orphan files as you suggested.
