Are you using a cross dissolve? That's what is normally used to make a fade in. What are the media specs and the project properties?

Yes I am using [CrossDissolve]. All footage was shot with the same camera with same settings. My timeline is a video on the main storyline and another video clip connected on top. I applied the cross dissolve to the video on top. The results was a dissolve from black but you can see both video. Also it seems like one of the video tracks was zooming in from a wide shot.

FCPX must cross dissolve in from a gap if you put the transition at the beginning of a clip on the primary storyline. This extends the duration of the clip. Say that you have a 1 second fade in. Well now that same clip will start 15 frames earlier than it used to and you can see video from those 15 frames. In order to get around this, place a generator (solid black) on top of the video and make it fade out for the duration you wish. That way you can keep the first frame where you want it to be and things work more like you'd expect.

Hi Rick,
If you have a connected clip at the start of your timeline and you want it to fade in from black: just put it on the primary storyline (ALT+CMD+Down Arrow) and press CMD+T.
