Memory question

Memory question was created by briesmas
Hello!
I am a bit confused with the memory usage - even though during the import into FCP X I marked the material to be saved into the other hard disk, not Macintosh HD, in the Activity monitor I can see how free space on Macintosh HD is getting smaller and smaller. This happens while the material is being imported. I don't get it. Why is that?
Also, as I understand, projects and renders are saved on Macintosh HD as well. And all this takes most of this disk space which is no good. Is there a way to tell my FCP X to save the renders and projects to other disk? I looked into the preferences but didn't see such option.
Can anyone help me with the advice?
Thanks!
Janis

In library properties set the media location and the cache location to the external drive.

Sorry no library properties. As I recall render and data files went into the project folder. If the project is stored externally that's where everything should be.

OK, data files goes to Macintosh HD. The project properties confirm that. But how do I change the location to another hard disk? There is no such option in properties. When imported, the material was saved not on the Macintosh HD but other hard disk. I'm confused...

You create a new event on the external drive and when you import you import into that external event.

Mmm, but that is what I do - open import window, choose new event and its location - the other hard drive. And I was sure everything is fine till I noticed that my Macintosh HD is almost full and with the projects I've been saving on the other drive...

You'll probably have to post screen screen shots of what you're seeing for numbers in the Finder and where. What are the sizes of the project folders? Where are they? The render files for projects are in project folders. That can take a lot of space.

This is handled on the Library level. Select the Library, in the Inspector, click the "Modify Settings" button.
- Media: Set the location for imported files, proxy and optimized files, and consolidated files.
- Cache: Set the location for render files, analysis files, thumbnail images, and audio waveform files.
- Backups: Set the location for backups of the library database.
If you change this after the Library was created, and want to move everything for that Library to that location, use the "Consolidate" function after re-setting the locations.

Did you mean to select the Project Library from the Library list? When I do so, the inspector doesn't show me 'Modify Settings' button. Just 'Modify Event References' which doesn't contain your mentioned Media, Cache and Backups. Or am I looking at the wrong place?
